Book Description

097452512X 978-0974525129 June 15, 2006
Two-year colleges are playing an increasingly important role in preparing students for well-paying, fast-growing careers in a variety of fields. More than 46 percent (or nearly 12 million students) of all U.S. undergraduate students today are enrolled in community and technical colleges.

They Teach That in Community College!? provides information about interesting, lucrative, and cutting-edge community college degrees and certificates unknown to many counselors, educators, and parents. It includes descriptions of these majors and programs, contact information for community colleges that offer these majors/programs, typical classes and employers, fascinating sidebars, and interviews with educators. Majors covered include American Sign Language/Interpreter Training, Animation, Automobile Design, Aviation Management, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Biomedical Photography, Biotechnology, Bowling Industry Management, Computer and Digital Forensics, Computer and Internet Security, Construction Management, Court and Real-Time Reporting, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Electronic Commerce, Enology and Viticulture, Equestrian Studies, Fashion Merchandising and Management, Fire Science Technology, Forensic Science, Geographic Information Systems, Goldsmithing/Jewelry Design, Massage Therapy, Motorsport Engineering, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Paralegal, Railroad Operations, Recreation Leadership/Outdoor Education, Renewable Energy, Spanish-Colonial Furniture Making, Speech Language Pathology Assistant, Surgical Technology, Travel Industry Management, Turfgrass Management, and Web Design/Development.

They Teach That in Community College!? features 70 chapters—66 of which focus on unique and interesting majors and four of which focus on schools that are especially unique for reasons as varied as offering special instruction for students with learning disabilities (Beacon College and Landmark College), to offering assistance to deaf and hard-of-hearing students (National Technical Institute for the Deaf), to offering free college tuition (Deep Springs College).

Two criterion were used to select majors to include in this book: 1) the major had to be fast-growing and offer good employment and salary prospects for students, and 2) the major had to be offered at less than 30 percent of community colleges in the United States.

They Teach That in Community College!? also features three appendices (Community Colleges in the United States by State, Top Community Colleges, Community College Associations) and three indexes (School, Schools by State, Association/Organization).
