5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read ...
Laura Brotherson's book "And They Were Not Ashamed" is one of the best books I have ever read. Laura takes on the sensitive, yet crucial topic of marital intimacy with great reverence and candor using Christian-based teachings. 1.0 out of 5 stars Written specifically for members of the LDS church
I ordered this book, because of it's high ratings. But, when it arrived, it became obvious to me that it was written for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Many of the references are to LDS-specific religious sources. If you are a member of the LDS church, this book is probably a great resource for you, and it would be good to add it to...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read ..., January 21, 2006
This review is from: And They Were Not Ashamed: Strengthening Marriage through Sexual Fulfillment (Hardcover)
Laura Brotherson's book "And They Were Not Ashamed" is one of the best books I have ever read. Laura takes on the sensitive, yet crucial topic of marital intimacy with great reverence and candor using Christian-based teachings. No other book (apart from the scriptures) in my memory has had such an impact on my life. Though written especially for women, this book is equally as informative and helpful for husbands to help them better understand the intimate needs and concerns of their wives (emotional needs and female sexual response). Men can also benefit by learning to overcome their own inhibitions and misunderstandings about sex. Read it together as a couple!

Laura's book covers not only physical intimacy, but emotional and spiritual as well. It also discusses the great importance of teaching our children correct principles about sex and how we can go about teaching them.

I highly recommend this book to all married couples and those planning for marriage. It really will turn your intimate life as a couple around and bring you much closer together."

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive, essential information for newlyweds and oldlyweds, December 23, 2005
This book is easily the best in its class of LDS based sex/marriage books. It is really great! Although written primarily to women, there is a wealth of relationship saving insight on offer here for men also. This is essential reading for the engaged couple, the newly married, or otherwise, the happily married or otherwise.

Rightfully concluding that societal convention, media extremism, church attitudes, and parental embarrassment have played roles in painting the wrong picture of sex; as something sinful, dirty, immoral, painful and distasteful, and barely allowed even after marriage, Brotherson's book is a tonic for all of us. With such negative, marriage stunting attitudes present in the average good LDS girl and boy's mindset, there is a desperate need for bold, appropriate sex education and Laura's book delivers! She fearlessly addresses this problem with a number of intelligent statements from other authors, medical professionals, church authorities and scripture. Indeed this is THE long awaited challenge to one of the, if not THE major cause of marital dysfunction and divorce in LDS society.

Although generally written from the female for the female perspective, Brotherson gives a startlingly accurate insight into both male and female behaviours within marriage and intimate situations. She then gives practical solutions and empowers the readers to initiate appropriate, constructive discussions on the topics we were once ashamed to speak about. There is also a particularly useful section on how to teach the facts of life to children, to help them to be aware, appropriate and unashamed through their development into adulthood and ultimately in their own marital relationships.

This can be a difficult subject to get right. I have read some LDS books on the subject and found them a little obscure and vague, while other sources can be a little too blunt, or graphic. The appropriate tone of this book rings true across all of its tricky content, succeeding in its aim to re-assert that intimacy is not meant to be tricky nor embarrassing. Even though it might be written to wives and wives to be - I personally find the insight invaluable and this book can improve all aspects of your marriage if you apply it. Just read it well before your wedding night!

What shines through this book is Laura's enthusiasm and spark for helping other people to find harmony in thier marriages. Such a comprehensive address to this problem can only have come from her own difficult experiences; after all as she is the first to admit - she knows it's tough, she's already been there and is willing to help.

All you have to do now is convince your wife to read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete coverage of the topic of intimacy within marriage, July 28, 2004
By
My wife, an LCSW who has practiced individual and family counseling, and has read many different books addressing this subject said 'And They Were Not Ashamed' was the most complete of any she has read and she felt the part about discussing sex with our children will especially help us in our parenting. I commend the author for having the courage to discuss the topic so openly and frankly. I believe there is an urgent need for it; I also believe the author was inspired to write this book and hopefully others will be enriched the way my wife's and my intimate relationship has been.

5.0 out of 5 stars We've waited 46 years for this book of marital revelations!, June 23, 2004
By A Customer
I want to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Laura Brotherson for her wonderful book, "And They Were Not Ashamed." Many parts of it could have been taken from my own life! My husband and I have waited 46 years for this book! (We call it the "Book of Revelations!") Laura's words are full of light and truth and are written from a kind and loving heart. I am so grateful she was brave enough to write this book and spiritually in tune enough to write it with the help of God. I am so grateful to live in this day and age when it is possible for such a book to be written (revealed).

My husband and I have struggled with all of the feelings and emptiness that were associated with our failure to find the emotional, spiritual and physical intimacy in our marriage that she describes in her book. This "empty feeling" led to our divorce after we had 3 beautiful children and had been married for 13 years. We remarried after 8 months, and have remained married. We've always struggled with hurt and emptiness never finding a connection with those things we wanted and needed most. I know I was led to find the answers to my prayers. I have found this book and now my husband and I are finding each other--all I really ever wanted and longed for.

I am recommending this book to everyone. I'm making sure all of our married daughters and daughter-in-laws will have this book as well. Thank you. Thank you Laura for being an answer to my prayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!, May 3, 2005
This is a must read for anybody that's about to get married or even some who already are. I'm engaged and my Mom gave me the book to read saying, "I wish something like this had existed when your father and I got married." All I can say is WOW! Talk about eye-opening! I had no idea, and I don't think I would have even after getting married. I had no idea that intimacy was such an involved and complicated thing. I have been given a new perspective going into marriage that will help to prevent any problems that might have otherwise developed. I really appreciate that the book is designed to put the woman and her feelings first. The book encourages a very loving and selfless approach to intimacy. Women are too often the first to be forgotten and neglected. I hope I can live up to making my wife the focus in all things.

This book has been needed by so many women for so long and it is finally here! For anyone who needs additional help in the bedroom, even if you don't think you do, this book is great. The last few chapters on teaching your children about sexuality are fabulous. Don't miss this book!

I have only read 1/3 of the book. WOW!! How enlightening. This is a MUST read for all married couples, in particular LDS (Latter-day Saints) couples. I had trouble putting this book down, and I HATE reading! This book gives lots of great scriptural references and helps in the breakup of false notions on sexuality as it relates to people of Christian faiths, however if you are not LDS you may want your ask a friend for their scriptures, although this not necessary. My wife and will be giving this book to all our newly marred friends and family. We highly recommend this book!!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am borrowing this book from a friend, and logged on to purchase it...for myself and family and friends. I wish I had this information when I was first married. Though I'm glad that I now have some guidance for opening discussion and teaching with my children.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am not Ashamed, August 9, 2005
This book has given me insight to better understanding how strong a relation can be and yet how fragile it is. Dr. Brotherson speaks to a subject that is taboo for many in the LDS Church and does it in a very respectful tone. Dr. Brotherson's passion for this subject comes through vividly and I found her direct approach very refreshing and enlightening. Whlie the book is written to LDS women, LDS men can benefit from this book also.
