5.0 out of 5 stars So Glorious That We Waited For Their Return..., April 23, 2006
By

This review is from: They Will Return (Audio CD)
Oh how I love Melodic Death Metal. From the masterpieces of old In Flames, to the epics from Dark Tranquillity, and on Sweden's sister coast of Finland...the tunes of Kalmah. How these five genius' can never create a bad album...hell...a bad song. The vibe and musical style of Kalmah should be heard by everyone, as it is beautiful in all aspects. The vocals are easy to recieve, the guitars are incredibly catchy, the bass is audible as can be, the drums lay down that feeling of unity, and the keyboard lays it's magic all over everything. I don't know if it is the water these guys drink or they have something that "happens" during birth that we don't know about, but the Finnish people somehow always spawn a better band than we do.

Although the roots of these guys dates back since In Flames and Dark Tranquillity (Long time ago!), these guys have been more on the recent scale, letting out album after album (or masterpiece after masterpiece) with something fresh and appealing. Last week I listened to their debut, and it was a striker. It then slowly grasped me and the songs one by one sunk in, until eventually everything was enjoyable. After hearing the entire -Swamplord- CD and making the decision to buy it, I figured there was no way that they could top it. "Not all bands carry mediocrity, OzzyApu". Oh how I wish all artists were like this.

How have they managed to top -Swamplord-? We all remember that one! Unbeatable riffs and solo combinations with catchiness and flare that would have Europe united under one flag. -They Will Return- features well put use of orchestras, keyboards, choirs, and I think I heard an organ on one song. "Human Fates" enters with the subtle bobbs from the guitars and the trebling bass, when Pekka and the guitars rush in with what they do best. This track features a really touching one minute keyboard solo grandioso. "Kill The Idealist" starts out pretty identically, but then turns to chugs and finally reaches a slew of ultra riffs, topped by a table-turning solo. "The Blind Leader" to me is the most catchiest guitar wise, as it really contains energetic guitars. I guess it is during the chorus where the guitars and the keyboards go hand in hand together. I will just have to say it is tranquil of all things. Packs a solo that would even make the great Dave Mustaine ponder.

"My Nation" starts off pretty well with this catchy hook you would expect throughout the song, but then relaxes onto keyboard control. At this very moment you are driven through the night sky effortlessly...untouchable and nothing to disturb you on such a journey. You are then taken out of it briefly by the apparent chorus. This one is strongly one of my favorites on this album, as it houses both soothing melodies with nicked solos, riffs, and the Melodic Death edge anyone would want to hear (Not Metalcore Style). Has a godly solo that would make Odon himself proud three coasts across.

I have not challenged myself this time in saying that the entire album will be listenable and that I will buy it. It, however, can only be a definite buy. The only way I can describe Kalmah's music is grand, majestic, and guitara solo-riffa ultima...

5.0 out of 5 stars Black metal - with a Dave Mustane feel., June 25, 2003
By
Sewer_Gator (Somewhere, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: They Will Return (Audio CD)
This is most likely the best black metal CD I have ever heard. This band seems very unheard of, and if you stumble across them, even if you aren't into black metal, listen to them! This CD is varied, hard hitting, and emotional. There is a Megadeth cover at the end - which I found to be very cool, becuase Megadeth rules. The songs shift in mood, and style - some very dark, in a melencoly and somber way, some very bittersweet, and one in particular (My Nation) with a heavy metal/power metal feel. I love it, and if you like metal, you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This sounds nothing like Bodom, May 26, 2005
This review is from: They Will Return (Audio CD)
The style is closest to what one would call "Swamp Metal" as the band calls themselves. The vocalist is actually what makes the band so great in my opinion. He blends into the entire band, creating that universal feeling. One reviewer claimed the vocalist could've been better. However, I must disagree. Also, the keyboard solos and the guitar riffs are much darker than Bodom. It's something you need to experience on your own.

Just to add onto everyone else's reviews, Kalmah is awesome. Most people I know that were big Children of Bodom fans had a new favorite band when I burned them a copy of They Will Return and Swamplord. awesome drums and percussion, mind-blowing guitars lead and rhythm, and you will eventually learn to love the vocals, they grow on you. so much talent here in one group, it's hard to explain unless you really listen to some of their songs all the way through. check out Swamplord and The Black Waltz, as well as a band called Wintersun.

5.0 out of 5 stars great!!, October 22, 2005

This is simply KALMAH's best release yet. out of the other two albums, this is the only one i always listen to.

the brothers KOKKO compliment eachother very well on guitar. i think on this album they went to a more melodic and more diverse writing style.

even though this is KALMAH's second release, it is way better thatn their first and last release. the song that shines out on this disc is KILL THE IDEALIST which has a very sick and melodic solo.

some people say they sound jus like COB, but if u have good musical ears, you can totally tell a big difference in their music.

the guitars fill this album with very good fast as hell riffs. the drums totally kick ass and goes very well with the music. the keyboards give KALMAH that melodic edge without making them sound whimpy and have a lot of beautiful passages. the vocals are decent, nothing too extraordinary but they get the job done.

if you want to get into this band, i suggest you get this album first, SWAMPLORD and SWAMPSONG are good but nothing like THEY WILL RETURN. this album is a must have.

im sure you will enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, March 19, 2003
This review is from: They Will Return (Audio CD)
This album can best described as being somewhat similar to Children of bodom, except taking all elements of their music, and making them more extreme and mixing it with old Dark Tranquillity. This album makes it dark, beautiful, fast, heavy, done with a greatly rounded band, with good, actually awesome, guitars, keyboards, drums, and bass.

The songs on this are absolutely amazing, with a good range, from slow, dark, and moody, too absolutely insane parts, blast beats, screaming, and all that good stuff. The songs never get never get boring, actually, the songs are gripping, you can't ignore them, they are the farthest thing from boring.

you can't pick a favorite song to on this album

5.0 out of 5 stars I've heard this before..., May 23, 2005
This review is from: They Will Return (Audio CD)
I have heard this music somewhere before... oh yes, I remember now... on every Children Of Bodom CD. They are extremely similar to COB. I have even heard people go so far as to call these guys a rip-off of COB. This very well may be true, but who cares if they are? This is a very good CD. Its very hard to find the perfect CD where every track is incredible. This is on of those CDs where it becomes very close to that level of perfection. Because even some of the greatest records of all time (Works like 'Damage Done' and 'Hatebreeder' and 'Colony' come to mind) have their flaws. But this is a very well played record with an incredible sound. If you don't have this record, I think it's time to go out and buy it. This is a masterpiece and you're missing out on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Children of Bodom with a black metal edge, July 11, 2004
This review is from: They Will Return (Audio CD)
They Will Return is one of the better black metal albums I've heard in a while. If you threw Children of Bodom's Follow the Reaper, Emperor's In the Nightshade Eclipse and Megadeth's Youthansia in a blender this is what would come out. There are myriad guitar solo's, keyboards, blast beats and ambiance to be found on this record. Like another reviewer said, this is black metal with a Dave Mustaine feel to it(They even cover Megadeth's Skin o my teeth on this album). The vocalist is the only thing that really isn't spectacular on this album and the reason this dosen't get a 5. He gets the job done but is pretty generic for a BM vocalist. Recommended for fans of Children of Bodom and Emperor. I also recommend Lord Belial, Norther, and Leviathan in addition to this.
