One song had an electric guitar but it was amazing to hear it sans any distortion.

My wife found this at a Goodwill store. I'd missed it. Luckily she handed it to me. The tracks are all classics, although many, perhaps most, are covers of songs that were hits by other artists. The performances are all top notch. This was still the era of live music and these artists came prepared to the studio. Arrangements are from third parties who studied classical music. These would be mostly G.I. Generation songs recorded in the 1950s, perhaps some early 60s. They are pre-Beatles, but even pre-Berry and Presley. One song had an electric guitar but it was amazing to hear it sans any distortion. The recording quality is perhaps as good as it gets. Remember this was the age of radio. The ribbon mikes were at their peak and recording engineers were eager and adept to capture sound that mimicked what it would be at a live event. Early ones are left in mono and later ones are in stereo. Stylistically these cover the era post-Glenn Miller until Elvis. From a collector's point of view, the restoration is a dream. When I saw the name Dennis Drake on the cover, I knew we were in for a treat. Drake, who was the primary mastering engineer for Philips' legendary Mercury Living Presence series is known for digging to find the best masters, then exercising restraint when transferring them to digital for release. He uses little or no noise-reduction, equalization or reverb to attempt to "modernize" the sound. His goal is to purely make them sound like the master tape would if you had access. I can't confirm he's the sole mastering engineer, but it indeed sounds like him. Kudos. I think anyone interested in hearing this music will be delighted. I'll have to order the other volumes, or get lucky at other Goodwill stores or more likely, on Amazon.

They're Playing Our Song is a wonderful collection music that spans 4 volumes and 8 CD's worth of classic performances. There are too many great artists to list them all. Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Andy Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Bobby Darin, June Christy, Frank Sinatra are just a few of the artists on this set. A wonderful collection of laid back romantic songs written by some of the greatest writers in history. If you love lush vocals, Great Arrangements and wonderfully crafted songs this set is for you. This set is out of print and I would recommend you grab this set while you can still get it! It is a real treat from beginning to end.

Would you like to turn back the hands of time and capture the spirit of a bygone era? Well, listen to these CDs on a late night, put on your best headphones, sit back, relax, and drift into somewhere in time...to that nostalgic period when music was synonymous with beautiful melodies and poetic lyrics rendered by great singers with impeccable vocal artistry who paved the way to a musical landscape of elegance and sophistication that we now call the Great American Songbook.

You will be engrossed listening to 30 timeless standards interpreted exquisitely by the best recording artists on Planet Earth: Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Mel Torme, Dick Haymes, Bobby Darin, Jimmy Durante, Jack Jones, Johnny Mathis, Bobby Vinton, Andy Williams, Gordon McRae, Al Martino, Ed Ames, Engelbert Humperdinck, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day, Jo Stafford, Julie London, Judy Garland, Keely Smith, Dinah Shore, June Christy, Linda Ronstadt, Patsy Cline, Les Paul & Mary Ford.

You can't go wrong with "They're Playing Our Song, Great Romantic Standards, Volume 1" if you're fond of everlasting and romantic songs that were enjoyed in the past and will continue to delight music lovers who love to listen to musical gems like "Unforgettable," "Stardust," "The Very Thought of You," "You'll Never Know," "That Old Feeling," "It Had To Be You," "As Time Goes By," "I Don't Know Why," "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" and many more. The music exudes varied moods and emotions from mellow, relaxed and warm to nocturnal, romantic and sophisticated; from delicate, laid-back and intimate to wistful, melancholy and bittersweet. This is my dear parents' kind of music that I've been hearing from our musical household when I was growing up.
