Contemporary Musical Crossed The Pond!, October 10, 2011

The 1980 London cast of Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carol Bayer Sager's broadway hit stars the fabulous Brit actor Tom Conti as Vernon and Gemma Craven(South Pacific, The Slipper And The Rose on film, etc) as Sonia. Conti is a great actor and uses his talent well to compensate for what he lacks vocally. He can't, however, compete with the original, Robert Klein. The original Sonia, the lovely Lucie Arnaz had a charm which made up for her weaker singing voice, while the velvet-voiced Craven, a stronger singer and veteran of West End musicals, needn't worry for she is simply terrific! In many ways as solid as the broadway cast with an ensemble that is more than competent. I saw a road company of this show while in college in the 80's and have loved it ever since. This serves as a perfect companion to the original cast recording.
