5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read this year
I didn't want Thief of Hearts to end. In fact, I think I'll just start reading it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even worth a speed read
I've read a number of the author's other books and for the genre they're not too bad. But this book had me throwing it down in disgust. A totally ridiculous story - estranged twins, one of whom has a lion, a bone marrow transplant, two fatherless female doctors, and then some little sick girl enters the story. The totally aimless meandering of the flashback episodes...

I've read a number of the author's other books and for the genre they're not too bad. But this book had me throwing it down in disgust. A totally ridiculous story - estranged twins, one of whom has a lion, a bone marrow transplant, two fatherless female doctors, and then some little sick girl enters the story. The totally aimless meandering of the flashback episodes had me skipping miles ahead. Yawn, who cares about these people? I don't even care to continue reading to find out if Caitlin ever finds her father.

Besides being boring, this book could have used a good editor. I nearly screamed out loud after one too many sentences that began with "which." Someone should tell Ms. Stone that a comma is a helpful device to string those thoughts together. I'm just glad this book only cost me 99 cents at Goodwill.

I am a big fan of Katherine Stone books, but Thief of Hearts was a big disppointment. Poorly written and not very exciting. If you want to read one her better works, try Imagine Love or Pearl Moon.

1.0 out of 5 stars YAWN!!!, August 14, 2000
By A Customer
I bought this book since the story synopsis sounded interesting. AND, I'm sure it could be if half the descriptive narratives were removed. Jumping around between characters, present-day and past rememberances left me feeling very disjointed. I couldn't get a feel for the characters either.

I haven't finished reading the book yet, and can't decide if I'll spend any more time on it. I'm glad I didn't buy the hardcover edition.

I have just one question. Did anyone bother to edit the book for content?? Maybe I'm the only one who finds it extremely BORING. YAWN!!!

The stream of consciousness writing, loooonnngg descriptions, and inability for me to feel for the characters made this book a waste of my money. I can't believe I read the whole thing...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great storytelling, December 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Hardcover)
Fraternal twins Patrick and Jesse are as different as night and day. His wealthy family reaalizes that the dark sibling Jesse is not fitting into their social class. His parents doted on the golden brother Patrick. When someone accuses Jesse of a heinous crime, his parents supported his incarceration. Only Patrick, loyal to his brother, had doubts, but the duo fails to communicate, which leads to a separation.

Nearing forty, Patrick is well renowned as a trauma and heart surgeon, but his luck has run out as he is diagnosed with aplastic anemia. He desperately needs a bone marrow transplant by a person who is a close match. The ideal donor is Jesse, but Patrick refuses to ask. Dr. Caitlin Taylor, a close friend, is the only person who knows that Patrick has a twin. She decides to find him. When she does, he is nothing as she expected as he is dark and sexy. Jesse agrees to help Patrick even as he realizes that there is a deep attraction between him and the beautiful doctor. Together they embark on a journey of healing guided by love.

Katherine Stone's storytelling abilities keep growing stronger with each new book she writes. The complexity of her tales is well known, especially the use of secondary players and subplots moving THIEF OF HEARTS to its exciting conclusion. Ms. Stone demonstrates her ability to make a character seem so real in settings that a book by this author is a very pleasurable reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been two books, March 10, 2011

(REAL NAME)
Jesse and Patrick Falconer are twins, estranged since they were 19. Patrick is now a surgeon and Jesse writes 'erotic thrillers.' Caitlyn Taylor, whose mother died of heart problems when she was 16 and never knew her father, is also a heart surgeon and Patrick's 'adoptive' little sister. ('Adoptive' is in quotes, because this is an agreement between them and not a legal-type adoption). Caitlyn's friend from college, Amanda Prentice is a psychiatrist at the hospital where Patrick and Caitlyn work as well. When Patrick gets sick and needs a marrow transplant, Caitlyn tracks Jesse down to convince him to be Patrick's donor.
Each of these characters have a secret and horrific past that is revealed throughout the book, through excessive and sometimes confusing flashbacks. It's not always clear what information exactly is being revealed to the other characters who are present at the time of the flashback, and what is just revealed to the reader. Also, these characters have an inexplicable tendency to imagine and articulate what is about to happen, in a way that is not evidently clear that these are speculations, and not what is actually happening next. However, despite these things, the plot is excellent and the characters are intriguing, with fascinating back stories. Actually, I'm kind of sorry that there aren't two books, one with Patrick and Amanda as the focus, and one about Caitlyn and Jesse. My only other...not complaint, so much...maybe reservation, is that the interconnectedness of all the individuals in the book is a little too coincidental to be believed. It's just a little too convenient and pat. I have to say, though, I that I thoroughly enjoyed the book anyway. A couple parts even brought tears to my eyes. Stone is an imaginative and evocative writer, whose only fault may be being a little too...imaginative.
