5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, funny, perfect!, May 18, 2004
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Paperback)
Having read Undead and Unwed, I wanted to read more of Mary Janice Davidson's books, especially the erotic novels she wrote for Ellora's Cave. Obtaining a copy of Thief of Hearts wasn't easy, for it is out of print, but I'm sure glad I was able to get a used copy! This fun, sexy novel enthralled me from beginning to end! Sparks fly between Dr. Jared Dean and Kara. Jared thinks Kara is special, but he becomes even more impressed when he discovers that she's tried to protect him from dangerous mobsters. Kara is a modern, female version of Robin Hood -- she steals from mobsters and drug lords to provide for the poor. And now she's taken a particular interest in Jared's safety. And that is how a steamy, original and entertaining love story begins. There are various twists throughout the novel.

This novel is full of Davidson's signature sharpness and wit. I've noticed that her novels have an awful lot of banter -- a significant part of her writing style. The erotic scenes are sensual and original. I am hooked with this author. Her crisp dialogue and wonderful storytelling are addicting. I can't wait to read her other novels, especially Undead and Unemployed, the sequel to Undead and Unwed, for I have a particular interest in her paranormal stories. In the meantime, I recommend this wonderful gem. That is if you're able to obtain a copy.

This review is from: Thief Of Hearts (CD-ROM)
This is one of those books that take you by surprise. The hero, Jared, is just a average emergency room doctor trying to succeed. The heroine, Kara, is a tough as nails theif, that robs from the rich and gives to the poor. Kara also sets up the filth of the city to be caught by the police. When she is caught in the hospital by one of the people looking for her. She fights her way through the man, as Jared witnesses what is going on. Kara finds out that Jared is in danger and decides to protect him. They squabble back and forth and the passionate sex. Kara thinks that she is not good enough for Jared, but Jared thinks that Kara is the most wonderful women in the world. He is determined to convince her that are meant to be together. There are wonderfully funny passages throughout the story. I love MaryJanice's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, Funny, Creative and Different - check it out!, December 9, 2003

This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Paperback)
Dr Jared Dean is spending yet another night on the ER graveyard shift when the sound of a scuffle attracts his attention. He comes upon a fight and is shocked to see a petite blonde woman kicking the butt of a huge thug-looking man. As she makes her escape he follows, not to apprehend her, but to her astonishment, to ask if she is all right! What a surprising man. But as security closes in she takes off leaving him to wonder who she is.

Jared cannot get the beautiful blonde off his mind and wonders if he'll ever see her again. Little does he know that he made quite an impression on her, too. Once able to think about what occurred the night before, Kara realizes that Dr Dean's life is in danger from the low-life scum she fought with, but who got away. He'll need protection until the cops bust the guy, so she appoints herself his bodyguard in the interim. When Kara reappears at the hospital the next night and tells him the situation and her plans to protect him, he's not sure he believes her, but any excuse to keep her close is OK with Jared. He's immediately infatuated with her and does little to conceal it, much to her disquiet. If he really knew her and the things she's done, he wouldn't want anything to do with her. But Jared is undaunted and in the days that follow does his best to understand Kara and get her to open up to him.

He discovers that Kara is the urban legend Avenging Angel (A. A.) and that she spends her time stealing from the scumbags and crime lords and giving to the poor. The way she sets up a child pornographer for arrest was quite clever! She begins to trust Jared and reveals her childhood in foster care and then on the streets. Time spent with Jared makes her long for things she can never have (like a normal life) and she suddenly feels weary of running. But with all she's done, the D. A. would love to get his hands on her and lock her up for a good long time. Jared is determined that will never happen and she will stay with him, in his life - he just adores her (he's so sweet and cute!).

I just loved this book, this story, and these characters. Kara was so streetwise and tough yet kind and vulnerable with her own strong sense of right and wrong. And Jared was just a sweetheart - tender, funny, yet tough and protective when he needed to be. His ready acceptance of Kara was almost too much for her, since she didn't think she deserved it. Jared reminded me a bit of Chandler Bing from FRIENDS. Before that turns you off, a less dorky, more confident and much more sexy and hunky version! A former class clown and slacker who found his true calling in healing others - like he heals Kara.

Another terrific read from MaryJanice Davidson. If you're looking for interesting, different and creative stories, check her out. But one thing to note - this is definitely an NC-17 book as some of the sex is a bit edgy and may be too much for some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, sexy and outstanding!!!, November 1, 2002

This review is from: Thief Of Hearts (CD-ROM)
MaryJanice Davidson is by far one of the best writers I have ever had the pleasure to discover and Thief of Hearts is an excellent addition to her growing list of works. Dr. Jared Dean is a gorgeous, sexy and outrageously fun hero who will have you wishing you were the heroine Kara and that he was in love with you instead of her. Kara, as with all of Ms. Davidson's heroines, is sexy, smart-mouthed and just a tad left of perfect so you can identify with her immediately.

The plot is fun and fast-paced. Jared is working in the ER one night when he witnesses a mobster, Carlotti, fighting with a beautiful woman. Kara, who is a kind of Robin Hood vigilante against the bad guys in the city and who has been after the bad guy, Carlotti, for five years realizes that Jared is now in danger because he can testify against Carlotti since he saw Carlotti engaging in some not so nice goings on so she decides to protect Jared until he testify.

Jared falls in love immediately with his bodyguard (lucky, lucky girl...read this book and see if you don't agree) and the story moves on with Jared trying to convince the girl of his dreams that he is the guy for her while she protects Jared from the bad guys and falls in love with him as well. Lot of fun action, very steamy love scenes...not sex scenes...LOVE scenes and witty dialogue. An entertaining read that you don't want to miss.
