5.0 out of 5 stars Second only to "Once an Angel" by Medeiros, Wonderful!
If I could sum up this book with just one word, I would really have a hard time coming up with it - this book is everything: pirates, humor, a sinfully wonderful hero, a heroine that is spunky and fun, and villains popping out of nowhere towards the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, Sometimes Not Believable, Pirate Fare
Perhaps it's because I have been reading some really good pirate romances that I found this one lacking. Frankly, it was easy to put down. It wasn't the writing; she writes well enough though her light, sometimes flowery dialog came across more like Regency fare. It was mostly the story, which it was hard to take seriously, and the characters that disappointed. As one...

If I could sum up this book with just one word, I would really have a hard time coming up with it - this book is everything: pirates, humor, a sinfully wonderful hero, a heroine that is spunky and fun, and villains popping out of nowhere towards the end.

Lucy Snow is in love - with a faceless, notoriously rakish pirate. See, he kissed her - big mistake. She's left with the memory of a kiss (and she left him a wallop of a memory, too!), and it's all she can do to compare Gerard's actions to the pirate's.

Gerard as a character is written beautifully. He is quite the well-rounded hero: he's studious, he knows his ships, he loves the ocean, and he won't admit it, but he's falling for Lucy. What more could a romance novel ask for? He has a younger brother who he has pledged to care for as their mother is no longer alive, and it's because of the fate of his life that makes him endearing. He has a soul hidden underneath - he cares about his brother, and he cares about those whose well-being he's in charge of. Even though he gets close to Lucy for reasons other than getting to know her better, he can't help but fall for her. Their kiss sealed that fate.

What's more, Teresa Medeiros' writings about the ocean in this story are truly worth the price of the cover. I can't help but quote a piece of it: "The sea at dawn is a cathedral. It's where darkness is conquered by light in a battle that's been waging for all eternity." I won't write any more of the quote, as I would suggest reading the book to get to that part, but truly, Teresa is a master at her craft. She is the writer I would like to become. Writers all have their unique styles, and Teresa Medeiros definitely has her own. I just hope that one day, my writing might be as well-done as hers.

Lastly, the humor Teresa is so good at writing abounds in this story. I nearly fell out of my chair when, in one scene, Lucy's father's valet knocks on Gerard's door at a god-awful hour of the morning, and there's Gerard, with nothing more than a sheet around his waist, shoving the door open, growling at the valet that he'd be out shortly, then slamming the door in the face of the miffed valet. There is a magical quality to Teresa's writing that draws the reader in - the humor in her stories is a part of that quality.

I'm a sucker for a pirate romance as well, so reading "Thief of Hearts" was a treat for me. It's a keeper, and it's a book that I've read more than once, and I don't hesitate to reccommend it to my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully hard to put down book!, August 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
When the notorious pirate Captain Doom tried to kidnap his enemy Admiral Snow he ended up taking Miss Lucy Snow, the Admiral's daughter, as his captive instead, stiring passions she never knew she had. When safely at home again her father hires Gerard Claremont as a bodyguard, who both quickens her pulse and her anger. With twists and turns in the plot the reader is left guessing as to who will steal Lucy's heart. This is my favorite book of Medeiros' that I've read yet! It is very well written and I had a very hard time putting it down. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a captivating love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pirate romance that captures your heart!, February 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
THIEF OF HEARTS is a thrilling romance. Captain Doom captured my heart from the moment he appeared on the page. He's the perfect wounded hero for Lucinda and she's the perfect match for him. They were meant to be together.

I've been a fan of Teresa Medeiros's books since LADY OF CONQUEST and this is Teresa Medeiros at her best. Her writing is simply magical. No one does humor and pathos better. She breaks your heart and then she heals it. This romance on the high seas belongs on everyone's keeper shelf. It's a classic and it ranks right up there with Laura London's THE WINDFLOWER. I loved it and I recommend it to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, January 11, 2004

It's rare that I'll read a book a second time - unless it really grabs me! Well, "Thief of hearts" is such a book. The hero is simply scrumptuous! "Captain Doom" is a clever fellow who exudes strength and sensuality. Our introduction to him is as a boy, and he captures our hearts immediately. Next, we meet Lucy Snow, our proper heroine, who has been taught an icy stance by her cold-hearted father. When she and Doom meet, it's electric!

Medeiros exceeds at stirring the senses, and this book is really one of her best. If you're looking for romance, this is one book you won't want to miss!

4.0 out of 5 stars Medeiros always writes beautifully, March 31, 2004
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
Not only does she really "get" romance and love (unlike some authors who focus primarily on sexual attraction), but her writing is, quite simply, beautiful. I often catch myself stopping to pause and savor a particularly well-written phrase or sentence. Not many authors can do that.

Lucy is, by turns, spunky and timid, depending upon the presence of her father, the admiral. But it is that contradiction that both enrages adn calls to Gerard Claremont. His rival is the mysterious Captain Doom...or is he? The twists and turns of betrayal and deceit keep the story moving and intriguing, and watching Lucy come out from under her father's thumb is good character development.

Still, for me, it is not Medeiros' best work. I cannot put my finger on anything specific; I liked the book, but it just didn't resonant with me as some of her others have. Nevertheless, it is a very good book.

I'm not one to read romance or historical novels. So never in a million years did I think I would ever read a historical romance. I went with a friend of mine to a book signing. As I sat there and listened to her talk...I felt compelled to read at least one of her books because she seemed like a very passionate person about her writing.

My friend recommended reading this book, since it had pirates in it (and she knows I love all things pirate). So I picked it up the night of the book signing and I am sure glad I did. This book is so vivid and detailed that I could picture the characters in my mind. The story kept me hooked from beginning to end. I was sad to finish it up, b/c I really enjoyed it.

I can't wait to read some of her other works. I hope they are as great as Thief of Hearts was.

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance on the High Seas, June 1, 2004

This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
Captain Doom has been unjustly imprisoned for five years and is out to take revenge and to clear his name. By chance, on the high seas, he captures, the innocent and pure Lucy Snow, daughter of Admiral Snow who was the one who betrayed him. He is too decent to compromise her but before he sets her free they are entwined in kiss of emotions which will be deeply ingrained in both their minds.

Captain Doom later disguises himself as a bodyguard called Gerard Claremont and applies for a position with Admiral Snow to protect his daughter, Lucy. Lucy and Gerard hate each other on first meeting and Lucy tries to gain her freedom from Gerard by trying to annoy him with menial tasks but she cannot deny her attraction towards this handsome rogue. Gerard has gained access to the Snow estate to look for papers that will clear his name. He does not manage to find the papers but kidnaps Lucy and leaves on his phantom ship, The Retribution.

Out on the high seas, Lucy finds out the true identity of Gerard but is not afraid of him. Lucy and Gerard find themselves drawn to each other. Gerard opens up Lucy's heart where Lucy has been at pains to hide her emotions after an upbringing without love from her father. Together Gerard and Lucy finds love and salvation within each other.

This was an action packed love story. The feelings of the two main leads are slowly built up over the entire length of the book and is totally believable. It's not a story where the hero and heroine fall in love immediately. Gerard and Lucy grow to love each other and accept each other's faults. The adventure on the high seas is rivetting and will keep you on the edge of your seats. A thoroughly good read indeed.

Lealing

5.0 out of 5 stars I'M SPEECHLESS !!!, June 26, 2005
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
I'F YOU ARE SITTING BORED AT HOME CHANNEL SURFING WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO, I SUGGEST YOU GET YOUR HANDS ON THIS BOOK. IT'S A MIXTURE OF ROMANCE (PRIMARILY), ADVENTURE, WITH A HINT OF MYSTERY. Teresa is one of the fewest authors who writes with spunk, spirit, heart and heat.

From the very first passage, you can't help felling sympathetic and yet horrified at what the little boy goes through. Though his life is really difficult and pointless, he manages to raise his younger brother and become a pirate, Captian Doom. Furthermore, he abhors the famous Lucien Snow for his own personal/professional reasons(no more said because I feel it will kill the story). He wants his revenge and he knows he can get it using his daughter. Sadly, he learns that Lucien doesn't give a rat's ass about his lovely yet prim and proper daughter, Lucy. Pretending to be Gerard Claremont, he applys and gets a job under Lucien Snow. Hired to be Lucy's bodygaurd gives him a chance to see her lively spirit, which is stiffled by her father. After they meet and fall in love, he kidnapps her so her father would admit his crimes. What kind of wrong did her father do to Edmund? How is her father going to react to the (2nd)kidnapping? This is where the adventure begins and the mystery is unraveled. The story just kept getting better and better. Even though I felt that Teresa could of ended the novel 20 pages earlier, I am glad she didn't. I guess she felt like adding more plot twists would make the novel 10X better. DON'T MISS OUT, GIVE THIS NOVEL A CHANCE!!!!!!! I am definitely gonna get my hands on the rest of Teresa's novels

This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
I love this book!! I have worn out my copy!! This is truly one of the best romances I have read. The characters are wonderful. The development between the two main characters, their angst, passion, humor, and vulnerability are engaging and moving. This is one of those books you can read over and over again. I highly recommend it to those who love romance with a vulnerable, yet strong hero who is dashing, dark, passionate, and still gentle and loving.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is for those who look for interesting plot twists., September 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Thief of Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
Usually in a historical romance novel you know the ending when you first start. Not so with this book. It had me guessing who would "get the girl" for quite a while. Teresa is a very good writer, and of her books I've read so far this one is my favorite. It is a very good book for those who enjoy historical romances with pirate themes and plenty of suprises. It has a strong heroine and a suitably tough, yet sensitive, hero (or is it heroes?). I don't want to give everything away, so read the book and be ready for some superior entertainment!
