4.0 out of 5 stars This is just my opinion of course... March 2, 2014
I think this game is beautiful in it's own way. Garrett and the other characters may not be that detailed, but its hardly a step back in gaming. I think the city itself is beautiful and the character models fit into that environment well. I personally feel like the gaming community has come to the point where once a graphical benchmark is set (EX: The Last of Us), anything that doesn't meet or exceed those expectations must be poorly made or a lazy attempt to get our money. I do not believe this is the case with Thief. So here are MY pros and cons for the game.

Pros:
-- The amount of choice the player has in the difficulty of the game.
-- Lots of replay value (unless you went for the hardest difficulty in your initial playthrough)
-- Beautiful environment
-- Many different ways to approach your goal in each chapter
-- The combat in this game is fun, I especially like the dodging. However i think the strongest point of the combat is that it really makes you feel like a Thief. You're not overpowered. You're not captain america gone bad. You're an agile thief that got caught and now you have to fight to stay free and alive. Every time i screwed up i felt this way.
-- The feeling of accomplishment when you play this game the way it should be played is very rewarding.

Cons:
-- Character faces could be better (yes this is a con, its just not worth missing the game over)
-- Not a big fan of first person stealth. However, i can see how it is more challenging since you can't see everything around you at once.
-- The movement can be annoying at times, like on ropes.

Overall:
-- I liked this game, which is why i gave it the star rating that i did. 4 Stars = "I Like it"

4.0 out of 5 stars An updated original June 18, 2014
I'm only a few chapters in, but I wanted to get my first impressions down.

I bought this directly through Steam because they were having a sale. It took me about 4 days to download the whole thing, which is probably still faster and cheaper than getting it through the mail on a DVD (after I adjusted my PC to not sleep, the downloading went much faster).

Second, I am a fan of the original Thief: The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal Age and Thief (III): Deadly Shadows. I have vivid memories of crawling along cobbled stone corridors with my beady eyes affixed to the light gem, hoping I'd timed the guards' routines correctly. I have a vivid of memory of the moment it dawned on me that this was not a first person shooter game, but a first person stealth game and how that changed everything for my gameplay.

The first Thief game is the classic and the standard by which all others are compared. I was a little disappointed by Thief II because of the steampunk robots, but I got used to them and there was enough creep factor that it made still highly enjoyable. There was also an open city that you could explore at your own pace and whim, searching for every jewel and gold nugget, hoping to hit 100% on your stats. The third Thief was the leat enjoyable for me, because it seemed very small and linear. They had done away with the rope arrows and given you a pair of climbing gloves and as much as I fought sometimes with getting a good hold on the ropes, I loved them. I missed the pagans and the religious zealots (Hammers).

I've been waiting for Thief 4 for a long time (as I'm sure many have), and when you wait that long and hope that much with only teases and hints to sustain you, it's unlikely any company can adequately satisfy every desire and dream you have.

5.0 out of 5 stars I freaking love Thief. April 14, 2014
Classic series, the grandpappy of stealth games, and I have been a HUGE fan of the series for a looong time. For everyone who is like "This game is trying to be Dishonored but it's not!" Bite your tongue. Dishonored literally would not exist without the Thief series... many of the original Looking Glass Studios folks who worked on Thief 1 & 2 ended up working on Dishonored. There are Thief easter eggs in Dishonored...

Anyway, now that you dang kids are off my lawn... about this game:

Pros: There's a lot of good stuff about Thief 4. Visually beautiful, The City has the right atmosphere, the levels are challenging, and lots of secret stuff to find and steal, which is of course the best part. There are some astonishingly horrific levels that make tingles go down your spine, because there are some terrible people in The City. I usually try to ghost my way through Thief games (no detection, no kill, and if possible, no knock-out) for the challenge, but the Dust to Dust level... yeah, sorry, some of those people had to die. The game does an incredible job of being immersive and emotional.

Cons: GIANT RESOURCE HOG. My gaming PC is on the old side, my video card is a GTX 460. There were times when Thief made my 460 cry a little. There was chugging, and I had to turn down some of the settings in certain levels, and bring them back up in others. There also seemed to be a memory leak initially, but that may have been patched out recently, because I hadn't noticed as much choking... or maybe the later levels are designed better. The initial City areas were particularly laggy. Eidos/Square Enix could have done a better job in tightening up the programming to avoid the resource hogging. I don't recommend Thief for older machines.
