terrific Athena Force romantic thriller, September 11, 2007
Following a dangerous art deal in Naples, Italy, Lindsey Novak learns of the abduction of Athena Academy students on the news. A graduate of the school, she is stunned as she listens to the kidnapping of teens Jazz Ryan, Teal Arnett and Lena Poole, but Jazz escaped.
With the help of her father's security expert Marko Savin, Lindsey begins tracking down the kidnapped females. They quickly learn a scientist plans to sell the girls and other Athena grads along with ova stolen from a lab to the highest bidder. Lindsey knows her life and perhaps her freedom are at stake, but she will do what it takes to rescue the teens and stop the mad scientist from destroying the world. Marko plans to cover the back of the woman he loves.
This is a terrific Athena Force romantic thriller that can stand alone but is enhanced by reading first LINE OF SIGHT by Rachel Caine. The action-packed story line is fast-paced even before Lindsey hears of the kidnapping and never slows down as she and Marko chase after a deranged diabolically clever scientist. Fans of the series will appreciate this fine exhilarating entry.

Lindsey Novak doesn't accept failure, and anything less than perfection is failure. This is a principle ingrained in her by her father, K-bar. Now that an Athena Academy student is missing, Lindsey feels an obligation to her alma mater, an obligation that could cost her everything. K-bar is determined to protect his daughter, and Lindsey finds herself stuck with Marko Savin. Can Lindsey locate the missing student in time? And will Marko be able to woo this feisty thrill-seeker?
THE GOOD THIEF continues the story started in Rachel Caine's LINE OF SIGHT. While THE GOOD THIEF can be read as a stand alone, the background on the kidnapping is fully explained in the first book. However, Judith Leon provides the necessary details for a new reader as the details of the kidnapping are gradually unveiled to Lindsy.
The Athena Force series features the independent women we loved in the Silhouette Bombshell line. Lindsey yearns to prove she is worthwhile, so much so that she'll try any daring feat just to show she has no fear. Inside is a different matter, as Lindsey is just as vulnerable as any other man or woman. This makes for an interesting portrait and Judith Leon does an excellent job at showing Lindsey's dissonance between her inner thoughts and her outward actions. There were moments that were a bit uneven, particularly in regards to her budding relationship with Marko, but this didn't detract from the overall storyline.
THE GOOD THIEF isn't the best book I've read in the Athena Force series (which actually started in the Silhouette Bombshell line), but it is still well worth reading. Judith Leon focuses more on the character of Lindsey initially, rather than jumping into the story involving the Athena Academy. While this was frustrating in that I wanted to know what was going to happen to Teal, it did allow for the development of Lindsey's character. The action kicks in during the second half of the book, making this an enjoyable read overall.
