What the... ???,

Made in USA in 2004, Serial# WOU-521, Playing Time 39:21Do you have the vinyl pressing of this on Elektra? Well, congratulations!!! At least you have 9 tracks. This re-issue still leaves us with an incomplete soundtrack to the movie (will SOME record company finally do a decent job of this?) On the bright side, the music playing during the ending credits of the film is here (Craig Safan's "Confrontation"), but this time, we lose "Beach Scene", the 7-minute extrapolation of the opening track "Beach Theme"... and it's certainly not because the disc is full!!! Why wasn't the rest of the film's music (even if not composed by TD) not included here ? This is the 3rd edition of this soundtrack on CD (1985, the 1995 "definitive edition" (oh, please...it even says "live" on the spine?!?), and now this 2004 version). I'm about "this close" to buying the DVD and editing the soundtrack myself... is anyone interested? LOL

To Add and to Drop - WHY?,
By
This review is from: Thief (Audio CD)
For those who were fortunate enough to aquire one of the first two releases of the THIEF soundtrack (like myself) congratulations - you have the version of the CD that contains the best song on the soundtrack, Beach SCENE. It has been dropped for this US release.
For those who were interested in obtaining the Thief soundtrack being mainly interested in the one song, Beach SCENE (most of the other songs can be found on other Tangerine Dream albums), please realise the following differences between Beach THEME and the now dropped, Beach SCENE. The song, Beach THEME is a much shorter track (almost by half) and there is a very cheesy, acoustic, "rock n' roll", drum beat that was mixed/dubbed over the original Beach SCENE song which has the much more mellow and less invasive electronic, sequenced drum beat in it. It's Beach SCENE that was both heard in the movie and over the airwaves back in 1981. If that is the song you remember (fell in love with) and are looking for, do NOT buy this latest release. Keep looking for those Out Of Print CDs - they are out there. On a lighter "note", it's very nice to see they added the ending/end-credits song, CONFRONTATION. This is a lose/win scenario for THIEF soundtrack fans - it all depends on which song is more important to you. If you already have the earlier releases with Beach SCENE on it then buying this latest version will now complete a defninitve soundtrack for them as that last song in the movie has now finally been added to the official soundtrack.

Nice to finally have, but.......,

It's great that someone finally released this version on CD but it's a day late...I already compiled music from this disc, the import disc, and from the Tangerine Dream disc "Force Majuere" into my own version of the "complete" soundtrack of Thief. It turned out great. I'd love to just give copies of it away to anyone willing to pay for the shipping but I don't know if that's a good idea. I'm fed up with tracking down out of print albums and CD's on Ebay for $40 - $80 per bootleg disc. I think someone should put a stop to all the bootlegging and start giving this stuff away! I've got a killer "Manhunter" compilation that I'd love to just give to people for free (all shipping fees would have to be paid for) just so I can try to put a stop to all this overpriced bootlegging going on. Just yesterday a bootleg of "The Keep" sold on Ebay for over $90.00--if I ever get my hands on a copy of this disc I would be more than happy to give it away to any interested parties!

Beach Scene+Beach Theme = a lack of Confrontation?,
By
This review is from: Thief (Audio CD)
Other reviewers have mentioned the lack of the longer Beach Scene on this release, being replaced by the shorter, more of a "single edit" Beach Theme. I found my copy of this CD has Beach Theme at Track 1 (3:44 run time), Beach Scene at Track 5 (where the insert says Scrap Yard should be)(6:50 run time), but no Confrontation anywhere. The last track on my CD is listed as Confrontation, but knowing the film as well as I do, this music starts in the night scene where Frank (Caan), along with his associate Joseph send Chicago's not-so-finest on a wild goose chase to Des Moines, then the scene immediately cuts to the vault heist in LA, also at night. The aftermath of the vault heist has at least another 10-12 minutes of film to go before the final credits roll.
I don't know what has caused this reissue to have what appears to be multiple versions, or for the music to differ from the track listing. As another reviewer pointed out, there's plenty of space on the CD for both the longer Beach Scene and Confrontation. Maybe somebody didn't listen to the tracks that carefully. I give it three stars for what's actually on the CD, and penalize two stars for what's supposed to be there but isn't.

The USA version of "Thief" is finally available on CD!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Thief (Audio CD)
I must say that I am very excited about this reissue of TD's classic soundtrack to "Thief." "Thief" was one of the first records I ever owned, and it marked the beginning of my love affair with Tangerine Dream. I always loved Craig Safan's Pink Floyd-esque track "Confrontation," but I was disappointed that it was unavailable on the import CD with the rest of the soundtrack. Seeing this available on Amazon.com for purchase is something that I never thought I would experience in my lifetime. The sound quality is excellent, and the presentation faithfully follows the original vinyl.P.S. "Beach Scene" is available on the UK import version and on the "Dream Sequence" compilation. It would be nice if both tracks were available on one CD. Maybe there are some legal issues involved that would prevent that from happening or make it difficult to do.

Errors in a Thief,
This review is from: Thief (Audio CD)
Due to a pair of mispressings, this reissue on the Wounded Bird Records label has had an interesting story line over the past several years.
The CD was slated for release like the 1981 Elektra/Asylum album version, with the inclusion of Craig Safan's Confrontation and the deletion of Beach Scene. The soundtrack had been released on Virgin Records with Beach Scene and without Confrontation. Because of the production errors, Wounded Bird has issued the soundtrack with the tracks found on the Virgin Records album and with the inclusion of Confrontation and Beach Scene, with Igneous removed. The Safan composition and performance was due to director Michael Mann's need for another sequence after Tangerine Dream had completed its work on the music, but was unavailable for additional material due to being on tour. Beach Theme and Beach Scene are two different mixes of the same piece and the album version of Dr. Destructo is different from the version on the film. It can get confusing due to the errors, but the music remains a highlight of the incredibly busy time TD had with side projects and arguably broke open the safe which made the band a serious competitor for movie soundtracks throughout the 1980s.

Brilliant Stunning Masterpiece.,

This was the album that turned me on to Tangerine Dream. To me, the third track, "Diamond Diary," is the greatest piece of electronic music ever recorded. Take every other song out, and this album still gets 5 stars alone on that one dynamic glorious song. The layers, the movement, the variations, the feel, the abstract qualities, the intelligence of it - masterpiece. The rest of the album's songs surround "Diamond Diary" perfectly; all of them are amazing. Now I do agree with the other reviewers that it would be nice to have a definitive CD version with all the songs from the film, but still you're getting a fantastic album - absolutely.

After buying the import cd over a decade ago, I thought I'd never get the final song "Confrontation". Since it's not Tangerine Dream I guess it didn't deserve to be on an album with their name on the cover. I then found out it was on the vinyl release from the olde days. After unearthing a copy and digitizing it to add to my custom CD, I now had the true soundtrack. The quality wasn't the best coming from 20+ year vinyl, but beggars can't be choosers.
I now see that this new release has the infamous track on it, but loses the other great track "Beach Scene". There are three tracks that define this film, "Beach Scene" and "Confrontation" are two of them. Omitting one is creating an incomplete soundtrack. My suggestion is to buy this release and track down the previous one with the green border. It's the only way to have a complete soundtrack, with a little work in itunes.

Driving Synthesizers,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thief (Audio CD)
Tangerine Dream is a German group that specializes in electronic music. This sound track is structurally conventional as an extended tone poem with a very much modernized "orchestration" of synthesizers and percussion. Insofar as the source movie was a "caper", the tone is dark and the rhythms drive forward.
