Book Description

March 1, 1998

One event has had more influence on Western culture than almost any other in history: the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. For 2,000 years the world has sought to better know, and to better understand, this man and His message. But what about the two criminals who were crucified alongside Jesus on that historic day? Who were these men who were tied by fate to one of history's most extraordinary teachers? Little or nothing has been told of their story.

The Thieves of Golgotha is an intensely dramatic portrayal of these two felons and their final days: Nikos, a free-born Greek sold into Roman slavery by his father, and Azriel, an unrepentant, agnostic Galilean. In prison they meet Bartholomew, a follower of Jesus, whose unshakeable faith gives them pause, and Barabbas, the Judean who would be released so that Jesus could fulfill His destiny. From their prison window, they observe the trial with Pilate; and finally they meet Jesus on the crosses of Golgotha.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The New Testament makes brief mention of the two thieves who flanked Christ on the hill of the skull. D.S. LLiteras draws these men out of the biblical background and places them center stage in The Thieves of Golgotha. Beginning with their confinement in the blackness of a Roman prison, the novel hauls you into the horror of impending execution, lurching from one torment to the next until you find yourself wishing that these two reprehensible men could find even a momentary reprieve--a level of identification between reader and antihero forged in rare talent. LLiteras's brutal descriptions paint scenes with a harsh reality that drags you deeper into the novel even as you instinctively try to avert your eyes. In contemporary dialogue strongly reminiscent of that in Hemingway's fiction, LLiteras's characters tell their personal stories of incarceration, doubt, pain, and salvation on a human level, where spiritual discovery is grasped with the gut, not with the brain. --Brian Patterson

From Library Journal

Lliteras's (In a Warrior's Romance, Hampton Road, 1991) novel is a thought-provoking retelling of the crucifixion from the viewpoint of Nikos and Azriel, the two thieves who died alongside Jesus. The two had been sentenced to death for killing a man during a robbery. While in prison, they meet Bartholmew. His faith in Jesus makes them begin to question their own lack of faith. Their eventual meeting with Jesus brings new meaning to their lives. Taking a well-known biblical story and expanding on it is always a risky proposition, but Lliteras provides fully rounded characterizations, not only of the thieves, but of Bartholomew, Barabbas, and Jesus himself. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic, February 24, 2000
This review is from: The Thieves of Golgotha: A Novel (Hardcover)
One of the most graphic books I've read! Compares to "Hiroshima." It was fairly accurate with what little biblical account we have of the thieves crucified with Jesus. However, the point of the book is NOT to give us yet another commentary on the Passion of Jesus. Instead, Lliteras gives us a most graphic and riveting look at the cruelty of crucifixion. Reading this book deepened my understanding of Jesus' sacrificial act. It is a must read for those with the intestinal fortitude to handle the graphic details. Let the reader beware: it is hard to put down - harder even to continue reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming!, January 17, 2000
This review is from: The Thieves of Golgotha: A Novel (Hardcover)
I just finished this book about half an hour ago. I am still reeling from the experience. The book is written in such simple, straightforward language, and yet it touched me so deeply.

More than once I had to put the book down because I was emotionally drained. I realize the book is a work of fiction, but I became so caught up in the characters that I found myself pitying them, hating them, etc. And even though Christ makes little more than a cameo appearance in the book, it is his interaction with the thieves that moved me the most.

I highly recommend this book. Whether one is a Christian or not, I think it is a text that will inspire much thought. Again, I am overwhelmed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar, stunning, new novel; the author is a rising star., August 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Thieves of Golgotha: A Novel (Hardcover)
I read this book at the suggestion of a friend, not expecting much more than a retelling of the classic story. What I got blew me away; the author, who I can't believe I've never heard of before (he has written other books that I _must_ read now), not only intellectually but emotionally connects the reader with the actuality--the reality of this historic event (the crucifixion of christ). I was moved beyond words. Even if you have no christian background, this novel will give you insights into christ and his effect on humankind that you can't get in any church. Simply incredible.
