Beyond the Veil with Tempus and the Sacred Band of Stepsons, May 6, 2010
The legendary immortal, Tempus, takes his Sacred Band of Stepsons, an ancient cavalry squadron of paired lovers and friends, up the steeps of Wizardwall in this second 'Beyond Sanctuary' adventure. The mission is to assure the survival and the freedom of the Nisibisi Successors. The enemy is the expanding Mygdonian empire and the wizards who serve her. Mythology, ancient history, and fantasy mix in a heady brew of love and war in an ancient military context. These aren't modern characters in ancient dress: they act, think, and suffer as did the heroes of archaic times. Bisexual Stepsons are harried from within and without as witches and warlocks and gods and demigoddesses spice up the brew. The better you know your ancient military history, the more context you'll have for these stories. Know nothing about ancient times? Never read the Iliad, the Odyssey, or even Shakespeare? Do you think Sun Tzu is a dish in a Chinese restaurant? Never rode a horse or carried a weapon or made love in the midst of battle? Never fear. The Sacred Band of Stepsons books may give you a taste for heroic fiction and the spirituality and philosophy of ancient times. The Morrises started these tale of the Sacred Band in Thieves' World, but Sanctuary was never like this. The authors don't rub their expertise in your face. Read the books as fantasy, as romantic adventure, or as mythological epics: you'll have a great ride. I particularly enjoy the relationships of the fighters to their gods, and the special metaphysical nature of Nikodemos, a pure soul who draws witches and evil of all sorts to him like a flame draws moths.
And nobody does evil sorcerers as well as the Morrises: the Stepsons have thinking adversaries and must evade the subtle, as well as the obvious, dangers facing them. Beyond the Veil is the second of three "Sacred Band of Stepsons" or "Beyond Sanctuary" novels. Before it comes "Beyond Sanctuary" and after it comes "Beyond Wizardwall." Read all three, or this one alone. The authors are that good. For people who've been in combat or handled policing situations, this book and its companions hold a special pleasure. Want to know what it feels like, to be depending on your brothers for your very survival? Against impossible odds? Far away from home? Where no one can be trusted? Read this book and find out.

Beyond the Veil with the Sacred Band of Stepsons, April 14, 2010
Free of Sanctuary, the Sacred Band of Stepsons rides into Tyse, below Wizardwall, and learns first hand to be careful what you wish for. In a darker, war-torn town full of preternatural forces, rival military contingents, power struggles and legendary sorcerers, Tempus and the Sacred Band of Stepsons fight to keep Nisibis free. Never have the loyalties of the Band to one another and to their commander been so sorely tested. Lives and loves are on the line for the Band in this second 'Beyond' novel. New characters spice the mix of myth, war-fighting, romance and philosophy that mark the Janet Morris Stepson books. Be warned: the Sacred Band pairs are loyal only to one another and their commander; the ending may surprise you, but as always, this ancient cavalry squadron gave me a great ride.
