5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever
I have been a Bette fan for years, and have all of her albums, but this is FLAT OUT my favorite! The power and passion of Cradle Days and Rain are unmatched. Total goosebump songs. I grew up in the disco era, and am a big fan of that music, so the disco flavor on this album is something I love. How can you not love Hang On In There Baby, Hurricane, My Night In Black...

3.0 out of 5 stars Non-disco highlights in a disco set
"Thighs and Whispers" is a frustrating album to listen to. It's clearly not among Bette's best. For these, you have to look to her first three original albums ("The Divine Miss M", "Bette Midler", "Songs For The New Depression") and her very latest, "Bette", which is the classiest and most polished set in her long and illustrious recording career. Released in 1979,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Bette's first disco LP, September 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Thighs & Whispers (Audio CD)
Prior to this LP, Bette's previous attempt at disco was a remake of Sinatra's "Strangers In The Night" inthe style of Gloria Gaynor. This LP captures Bette at her most campiest"My Knight In Black Leather"(big gay club hit). Her I am woman hit "Married Men".Johnny Brisol's hit "Hang On In There Baby".To the sincere ballads "Rain" & James Taylor's "Millworker"

5.0 out of 5 stars Midler tries Disco...., August 11, 2002

.....and kinda succeeds. There are some nice tracks on this album. Like someone said, the highlights are the non-disco tracks: "Millworker", "Cradle Days" and "Rain". O.k. "Cradle Days" is probably the most soulful tune sung by a white woman, period. She sings the ... outta this tune. When she literally yells, "you took my darling babies away from me, you really rung my heart in two".....OMG..I melted. "I Don't remember too much about my Cradle Days, guess you can say I became a woman too fast". Her version of this tune almost brings you to tears, never has she sung so honestly, she has mentioned in past interviews that this is actually one of her favorite tunes too. "Millworker" is a quiet masterpiece, she almost narrarates it. This could of worked for Linda Ronstadt too. "Rain" is another good one too. The Best uptempo on this record is the "My Night In Black Leather" tune. It's does have ... written in red letters on it but it's soooo campy and fun that u can't help but love it. Other noteworthy tracks are "Big Noise.....", "Hurricane" (which kinda drags but hey, she wrote it) and "Married Men". The only clunker IMO is "Hang On In There Baby".

During this time, Bette was a follower. She even tried some New Wave on 1983's "No Frills" and hadn't quite found her niche. I still like this record for it's danceable tracks, soulful belting and (good looking) cover. Buy it!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars BETTE'S DISCO ALBUM, June 13, 2000
This review is from: Thighs & Whispers (Audio CD)
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW! LISTEN TO THIS CD IN THE DARK, ALL LIGHTS OFF AND LYING ON YOUR BED AND PARADISE WILL COME. YES, 'KNIGHT IN BLACK LEATHER' HAS GAY WRITTEN ALL OVER IT, WHILE 'HURRICANE' IS BEAUTIFULLY DISCO LIKE DONNA SUMMER'S 'FOUR SEASONS OF LOVE', AND MORE. I CAN"T BELIEVE IT! GET ALSO 'NO FRILLS', ONE OF POP'S BEST ALBUMS EVER!

5.0 out of 5 stars Disco Fun, June 21, 2005

This review is from: Thighs & Whispers (Audio CD)
This CD is alot of fun, showing the Divine Miss M at her Disco peak. Great classics like "Married Men" that are upbeat and get you dancing, and lets not forget the camp classic "Knight in Black leather". This CD shows Bette doing disco how it should be done, and also the ballads on here are lovely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, February 20, 2003
This review is from: Thighs & Whispers (Audio CD)
...I have listened to this cd after a pause of a couple of years and it surprised me. Some somgs I didn't like a lot in the beginning have become my new favorites.
"Big Noise From Winnetka" is a fun song that I knew before, from the Divine Madness video, but I have to say the studio version is a little weaker than the engaging live performance, and as with another track on this album, Bette's voice can harldy be heard under the Harlettes and the music. The songs is typically 6 mins+ long as it was in vogue back then, but it could have been better.
"Millworker" is a great piano tune, with great vocals and lyrics delivered with a genuine touch by our Divine Miss M. Thank you.
"Cradle Days" is one those I'm not really fond of (yet), but it's not too long after that that "My Knight In Black Leather" takes over and storms your stereo. In true Village People fashion, a fantastically gay gay song, with male choir, and maybe too little something. Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but it's a great song I fell in love with right from the beginning. Have you ever seen Bette perform it at the Musikladen in Germany? Hilariously camp.
"Hang On In There Baby" is one of those, what can I call it, Disco Ballad, with a great light Disco base, lovely vocals and arrangement. Along with "Hurricane", the track I love the most here, it's the great Disco Bette tune in my opinion, two tracks that deserved way more attention.

"Hurricane" begins with whispering waves (well, kinda) and Bette's intro is a favorite of mine, like the rest of the song, but hearing that alone makes me happy. The is a drumming of some sort of "Hawaiian" ...well, drum, that I also love.
Right now I don't remember how "Rain" goes, but personally, I don't really care for this or "Married Man".
"Married Man" is more of a rock-orietanted disco track. I know it was like the only hit from this album, but it makes no difference to me.
If you like Bette Midler, and like Disco, this album is for you.
This is the album that got me looking for the Disco albums that several artists committed to in the craze of the 70s.
It is one of the best in my opinion

this album released in late 70's still holds it's own...some songs are timeless such as hang on in there baby, hurricane. the dance flavor of this release is still relevent today...even tho bette says knight in black leather was one of her 70's regrets it still rocks and is fun to hear..check this release out for bette at her dance best
