Just to set some facts straight -- (1) THIN AIR was authored by George E. Simpson (not George Eaton Simpson) and Neal R. Burger. (2) THIN AIR is not based on THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT, either the movie or the book by Charles Berlitz and William Moore. THIN AIR came first. THIN AIR is fiction, not fact, and was never purported to be fact. It is a fictional work...

It is a fictional work based on stories that were circulating in the 1970s about The Philadelphia Experiment. It was preceded in publication by Simpson and Burger's GHOSTBOAT (1976) and was followed by their FAIR WARNING, SEVERED TIES and BLACKBONE. Burger passed away in 2005. Simpson still breathes and lives if only to correct these facts. Oh well, maybe for other reasons, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Fiction in a Twisted Genre, March 22, 2000

I have read this book many times in the last 20+ years. It has an eerie fascination. The characters are vivid and very strange. Good read for those who are familiar with paranormal and borderland science.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first novel I ever read...., November 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Thin Air (Paperback)
When I first saw this book in '77, I was allured by it's cover. Now it is the novel I judge all novels by. I do not presently have a copy, but I remember it's engrossing narrative that kept me up all night. When I saw the movie "Philadelphia Experiment", I was disapointed with it, I saw similarities, but this was the novel that started all, and it's told far better here.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book, November 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Thin Air (Paperback)
My father had a well-worn copy of this book, and when I sat down to read it it became worn some more because I had to read it several times. It's an incredible tale, and just for the record I ought to mention a timeline (I'm pretty sure this is accurate): This book was first. The movie "The Philadelphia Experiment" was BASED ON THIS BOOK, not vice-versa (at least that's what I've been told). Then came "The Philadelphia Experiment" (the book), then came "The Philadelphia Experiment II" (the movie). If anyone knows if this is true or not, please let me know.

5.0 out of 5 stars When do we get a movie?, October 18, 2011

This review is from: Thin Air (Paperback)
This is a great book. I read it about 35 years ago and loved it then. Since it's not in print any longer, I didn't think I'd get another read, thanks Amazon! It's a good sci fi book and without ruining the book it's about an experiment in Philly, but not the same story as the two movies that have come out. It's a good read for anyone interested.

This is Thin Air by William Marshall which is not science fiction but a mystery in a series.I was rather disappointed but a friend reads the series so it worked out For me.

So be aware Amazon has a bad listing here!

4.0 out of 5 stars Naval SF Thriller, May 12, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: thin air (Paperback)
Concisely described, this is the story of a Navy ship and its crew (while all are holding each other's hands on main deck) totally disappearing into thin air. Twenty-five years later, some men start exhibiting strange behavior to which a Navy investigator is assigned. It was written by the same two authors who penned another military sci-fier. Ghost boat. I found it to be a better than average read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book that is Hard to find., March 12, 2009
This review is from: Thin Air (Mass Market Paperback)
I first read this book back in about 1984 when i was 12 yrs old, my dad had a copy lying around and i picked it up and read it with no real idea what it was about. I though the book was fantastic and when i got married and left home many years later i looked for the book, but could not find it. The book is based around naval testing - much like the Philadelphia experiment stories, around making ships invisible and the following cover up. This was released i believe around 1977 and is a book i can read again and again. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I have read!, February 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thin Air (Paperback)
I bought this book by chance. Once I started it I was hooked and immediately went looking for other books by the authors. This lead me to "Ghost Boat" which was another great thriller. Where have these two authors gone?
