In 2005 Jonathan Coulton dropped out of a perfectly good software career to write music on the internet. He embarked upon a bold experiment called Thing a Week, in which he home-recorded and released a new song every week for an entire year, giving them all away for free. Even he thought he was crazy. But while a struggling music industry fell to pieces over filesharing and shifting business ... Read more in Amazon's Jonathan Coulton Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Geek folk-rock cleverness at its absolute best March 30, 2008
Format:MP3 Music
This is another collection from Jonathan Coulton's brilliant experiment in songwriting called "Thing-A-Week" in which he wrote and produced a new song every week for a year. Of the four albums in this series, this one is my favorite, most notably because of its inclusion of the computer programmer anthem, "Code Monkey", arguably Coulton's most popular tune. Coulton's music includes more than just clever lyrics, it is also highly melodic -- clearly, he has a talent for finding musical "hooks" that make his songs memorable. Further, the high quality of production is amazing, considering that he is recording this music in a makeshift studio in his own home. Not every song in this set is perfect, of course -- "Rock and Roll Boy" is a throw-away novelty, for example -- but most of this CD contains some of the most entertaining songs I've heard in a long time, with a great mix of humor, satire, irony and top-flight musicianship.

Required reading for school. Probably wouldn't have read it if it wasn't required. Read it if you have nothing else to choose from.

4.0 out of 5 stars The master of geek music July 11, 2009
By Mo Jo
Format:Audio CD
What can I say about this man's music. These are great songs, with great subject matter.

I love his work and it's nice to see he's starting to get the attention he deserves.

Another of my early finds and a true talent.
