Mellow and Beautiful,

McCoy Tyner's piano is instantly recognizable, he is one of a handful of pianists since Bud Powell and Art Tatum that I will listen to anytime. On this CD there are some beautiful solo piano pieces, which are the highlight of the recording for me. The pianist is playing with authority and passion. There are some cuts with John Scofield on guitar that I liked less well. On these tracks McCoy is holding back, of necessity because of the guitar up front, but I just don't think John Scofield has the range or depth on his instrument to play with McCoy. These tracks sound forced, Scofield's more funky sound and his more limited ability doesn't go so well with McCoy's deeper brand of playing. But overall this is a very mellow and listenable CD, and I have been playing it often.

McCoy truly dispalys his dexterity on the kebord with this album. The entire CD is almost an understated solo performance, with an interesting tenor sax accompaniment on one of the tracks.Great for listening and relaxation. |
