Companion Recording to "Live At The Sweet Basil",
By jazz lover since 1960 (Tampa, Fl. and Franklin, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Things Ain't What They Used to Be: Last Set at Sweet Basil (Audio CD)
Nick Brignola recorded a superb baritone sax set in 1992 at the Sweet Basil jazz club in New York entitled "Live At the Sweet Basil." (See my review) This is a release of extra material not included in the "Live" release.
Much as I adore most things that Nick recorded, I can only give this 4 stars. If you have to choose between this and "Live At Sweet Basil" get "Live At Sweet Basil." If you are a Nick Brignola lover like me, you will have to have this recording to get as much Nick as possible. One reason why I don't give this 5 stars is that Nick plays clarinet, alto and soprano on this recording, and I have to have Nick's baritone sax, or I'm not happy. Don't misunderstand, Nick plays excellent clarinet, alto and soprano. It's just that I want to hear his baritone. Mike Holober is a superb pianist, and Rich Syracuse is fine on bass. I love Dick Berk's drumming. He really can swing. I just wish he didn't feel the need to overuse cymbal crashes throughout. |
