5.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked / out of print disc from an underated group...., November 5, 2011
This review is from: Thing of Beauty [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
As a whole, the Volcano Suns were not appreciated in proportion to the quality of their output. While the music they created shared some similarities to the (related) Mission of Burma (i.e. they rocked hard and could put out a squalling wall of sound), the Suns typically had a better sense of humor and were somewhat more tuneful, though no one was going to mistake them for a pop group.

Early discs "Bright Orange Years" and "All Night Lotus Party" were really good, but sadly, overlooked outside of their Boston-centric fan base. This disc is their sprawling masterpiece, in my humble-O, in all its messy, disjointed glory, showing their capabilities of rocking out in a variety of song types and idioms. Like Burma, the Suns were more "influential" than "successful", in the usual sense.

Recommended for fans of melodic walls of sound i.e. Burma, Husker Du, Pixies, et. al. Fave cuts: "Barricade", "Man Outstanding", "Deeply Moved." Hell, when you hear "It's a Conspiracy" you'll swear its Burma. Also check out the cluster of cover songs/ homages near the end including Red Eye Express (Devo), Kick Out the Jams (MC5), and Needle in the Camels Eye (Eno): all fun tips o' the hat.

This disc can be hard to find so snatch it up when you have the chance.....
