Goold's work as a Cardinals beat reporter is well-known and deservedly acclaimed, well-considered and informed and also witty to boot. His take at 100 points of Cardinals history and the Nation comes out in succinctly written, short articles that you can flip through at your leisure or enjoy reading straight through as a book in its own right. No question this is a must-have for any Cardinals fan's bookshelf and a true treasure of baseball writing.
There is no better read on the St. Louis Cardinals than Derrick Goold. I read every article of his I can from the Post-Dispatch and this book is simply an extension of his insightful and engaging writing style. I hope Goold some day goes on to receive a Spink, because those of us who follow the Cardinals know how spoiled we are.
A great little book to carry along to doctor office, waiting for one's plane to board, etc. when one only has a short time to read some short pieces on Cardinal history, little known Redbird tales, etc.
The St Louis Cardinals have been one of the most successful franchises in MLB history, with a National League-leading eleven World Series championships as proof. When a team captures that many titles, it stands to reason there were a lot of great players - many of them Hall of Famers - who helped make it all happen. Their exploits have created a rich heritage which Cardinal fans cherish; and Derrick Goold has identified 100 different aspects of that heritage which could be labeled "can't miss" for any die-hard fan.
Goold - a terrific sportswriter who knows Cardinal baseball as well as anyone - has compiled this wonderfully engaging "to do" list for Cardinal Nation to follow. If you love the Cardinals, you'll certainly love this well-crafted tribute to a wonderful franchise.
