Book Description

January 1, 2002
There must be a reason behind the writing of a book. In this case, the idea for writing Things Chinese was inspired by a French friend visiting China.

Our job enabled us to take many foreign friends on tours in China. During such tours they asked a lot of questions, such as why the Chinese eat dumplings, post portraits of the Gate Guardian God on their doors and let off firecrackers on New Year's Day. Why should the tiles that cover roofs in Beijing come in yellow, green or black? What do the animal figurines that perch on roof ridges symbolize? Why the stone turtles are burdened with stone tablets? What's the purpose of the ceremonial columns in front of Tian'anmen Gate? Twenty years ago, a French friend told us that during his travel in China be was keenly on traditional Chinese culture but found it difficult to understand. He suggested that we write a book on Chinese culture.

In 1994, the English edition of Things Chinese was published. It soon became a hit with our readers, and that was why the book was reprinted twice. However, occupied by work, we did not have time to come up with revised edition of the book.

Entering the new century the China Travel & Tourism Pressdecided to do a revised edition with more illustrations to give the book an entirely new look. Taking this opportunity we introduced 70 more Chinese cultural things in this book. So abundant is the Chinese culture and folklore that a single book like this can hardly cover both the width and depth of it. Given more opportunities, we will continue writing about it so as to do our humble bit for the dissemination of the Chinese culture.

We would like you to give us your valuable suggestions, so that we can make changes in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, March 7, 2009
This review is from: Things Chinese (Paperback)
I bought this book in Beijing and ended up buying multiples to give to all of our friends who planned on traveling to China. The book is unique in that it covers every thing from folk art to anthropology to food, customs, etc. I have many books on Chinese customs and folk art ,but this one is where I go first and it is light enough to travel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect reference, June 2, 2008
This review is from: Things Chinese (Paperback)
Things Chinese is a near perfect reference book. In fact, no one should come to China without having a copy. I have lived in China for two years and have many reference books, but this is the best for any traveler to understand things Chinese in a simple format.
