Book Description

0836210905 978-0836210903 April 1, 1996 Original
The thought of her little sister, Amy, going off to the big world of college frightened Stephanie Edwards. How would she handle registration? What would she do on the first day of classes? How would Amy ever survive being away from home and family? Instead of taking the usual big-sister approach ("Oh, it's great. You'll love it!"). Edwards thought back to the trials and tribulations of her own first year at college, then created what has become the thoughtful gem of a book, 101 Things a College Girl Should Know from a Big Sister Who's Been There. "I tried to think of all the things I wish I'd known when I was a freshman," Stephanie writes her sister. "This list is advice based on some of the things I did wrong, something of the tings I saw my friends do wrong, and some things all first-year students do wrong. I hope you can learn from our mistakes." Edward's enlightening list will help college-bound freshmen everywhere to make that exciting-but-scary transition to campus life. She's full of thoughtful insights on the learning experience, such as Tip No. 2: "Whenever a professor offers office hours, visit him/her. (It makes a good impression.)" or Tip No. 19: "Remember: Frat guys + beer = TROUBLE"; and to help with life away from home, Tip No. 44: "Don't discourage your feelings of homesickness. (They pass.)" From tutoring to tooth care, class registration to roommates, 101 Things A College Girl Should Know has it all. Filled with helpful hints and gentle musings, this little book is a guaranteed hit as a graduation present, send-off gift, or thoughtful gesture for any campus-bound young woman.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Cute - No Substance, October 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Things a College Girl Should Know (Paperback)
Honestly, this book is in love with its own cuteness. Not only is it tiny (yes, you get very little physical book for the money), it just isn't very helpful. I purchased this book as a graduation gift earlier this year, and decided not to give it. The pages are filled with absolute drivel. I bought an entire set of how to survive college books as part of a gift basket.

The better books (in no particular order) would include:
(All are available from Amazon.com)

* Confessions of a College Freshman (ISBN: 1589196600 ) - a good solid read with heart felt advice.

* College 101: The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read (ISBN: 0966412206) The fact that college professionals panned it - should tell you something -- it is HONEST. Not to mention downright hilarious. The author holds back nothing! A very insightful author reveals the dirt on higher education.

* Been There, Should've Done That (ISBN: 0965608611) - just honest to goodness truth and common sense. Good practical advice, and well thought out. It is a quick, easy, but well worth reading book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh, please....., February 7, 2005
This review is from: 101 Things a College Girl Should Know (Paperback)
Honestly, it is just amazing to me that an author can make money from a publication (I refuse to even refer to this as a "book") with the kind of obvious advice that amounts to "Be careful at night, study hard and eat all your vegatables". Don't waste your money on this, this book can be read in 5 minutes in any store without paying for it. Several other reviewers have recommended more helpful and meaty sources of helpful advice for the college student and I concur. Pass this one up.

2.0 out of 5 stars cute book, but..., March 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Things a College Girl Should Know (Paperback)
This is a really cute book, but upon opening it the disappointment was great. It reminds me of those 101 things to do in a bathroom type of lists that are passed around in emails; the advices were THAT short and many were common sense, about 10 advices in the book actually were helpful but those would easily have been found in other books. If you're looking for a college prep guide, don't waste your money. If you just want a cute book to give as presents, then by all means...
