About the Author

Born in Helsinki, Finland, Mark Everett Stone arrived in the U.S. at a young age and promptly dove into the world of the fantastic. Starting at age seven with the Iliad and the Odyssey, he went on to consume every scrap of Norse Mythology he could get his grubby little paws on. At age thirteen he graduated to Tolkien and Heinlein, building up a book collection that soon rivaled the local public library's. In college Mark majored in Journalism and minored in English. Mark is feverishly working on his next book, The Judas Line, while his amazingly patient wife, Brandie, keeps him and their two sons, Aeden and Gabriel, in check. From the funny, attention-grabbing opening line "Mondays suck. Always. Standard rule of life.", Things to Do in Denver When You're Un-Dead, had me completely hooked. Mark Stone has built a fantastic new world that was fascinating to read.
The cast of characters were gruff and gritty, but also likeable and worth rooting for. The center of the story, Kal Hakala, is the ultimate hero. Kal is a tough guy, but also can be kind and generous when the circumstances warrant it. Clues lead to the belief that Kal has a secret. A secret that has led him to this point in his life, and could be his undoing. He is the ultimate leader and go-to guy in a company of preeminent undercover warriors. Each member of the team, from Pat the receptionist/psychiatrist, Sue and Brian, fellow agents, on up to the man in charge, BB, is intriguing and worthwhile of their own story.
The world that Mark Stone has (hopefully) invented for Things to Do in Denver When You're Un-Dead is so thorough, I don't believe a single detail was left amiss. There is a weapon or computer program to combat every situation. The beings who occupy this world range from miniature creatures, Brownies, who keep his life running smoothly as long as he supplies them with snacks and live in a miniature RV under his desk, all the way up to Class 5 demons who are the ultimate enemy of the team. There are vampires, zombies and ghouls to contend with. And believe me when I say that in this world they are not the misunderstood and endearing creatures we've been reading lately!
Things to Do in Denver When You're Undead is perhaps the "smartest" book I have read in quite a while. The dialogue is sharp, witty, funny and kept me reading obsessively. The plot was brilliant. There were many major twists and turns that had me guessing, and gasping, and at one point sobbing, right up until the very last line of the book. My only complaint? That now I'll have to wait for a sequel!

**Honestly, I could have written a whole review based on the many lines in the book that I loved. Here is my favorite:

"Fortunately for the good citzens of the Mile High City, we came, we saw, and we kicked undead ass, ridding the place of a smelly, rotting menace."

When Mark and I talked about our different novels I was quickly taken by his title. I am generally not a zombie kind of guy. I am sci/fi through and through. But I wanted to give it a fair read. Boy did I find more than I bargained for. Mark is a great writer being able to take you into his story and not letting you leave.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kal and the rest of the BSI. Kal is a cross between Bogart and a jack-ass (Sorry Mom). I loved his attitude!!! The characters were very strong and it wasn't just another zombie book.

I look forward to the sequel!!!

I love paranormal books. LOVE. So when I found out Mark Everett Stone was offering a chance to review an advanced copy of his book I dove at the chance.

I was not to be disappointed, either. From the moment I began the first page to the final flip of the last, I was hooked. Mark's snarky to serious main character offers up equal doses of sarcasm and action despite his deeply damaged soul. Kal Hakala is a man torn by loyalty to his team at the Bureau of Supernatural Investigation, deep personal hurts that span twenty years and an all consuming rage that seems to be an entity of its own.

With an equal balance of information and action, Mark shoves his reader into the life of an agent of the BSI, dealing with magic, zombies and Class 5 supernaturals that make vampires seem like fluffy kittens. Stir in a healthy dose of fairy-like Brownies with an obsessive compulsive cleaning disorder, a newbie agent dubbed Green Pea, a haunting that may or may not be a good thing and a whole lot of painful back story and you have a mess waiting to happen.

The writing is sharp, fast and engaging. The characters are fun and/or not so fun in all the right places. Mark has captured the soul of his lead character so well that it's like the reader is sitting having a $300 bottle of vodka with him, chased with an aromatic and equally expensive cigar while Kal spins tales of his hey day, punctuated by live action reenactments so real you wish you hadn't eaten dinner.

Five stars, two thumbs, fantastic.
