K-Gr 3-The intent of these books is admirable-to explain everyday things on an everyday adventure at the seashore or in the woods-and the labeled, full-color illustrations are engaging. However, while the texts would be appropriate for beginning readers, they may find that these general introductions leave them with some unanswered questions. If "Tides are caused mainly by the moon," what are the other causes? Threads come out of a spider's body through tiny tubes, but how is thread made? The author's bold promise on the first page of Beach that, "This book will explain all you may have ever wondered about while at the beach" may well fall short of such a claim. The discussions that these books encourage will likely demand additional research.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt. St. Alban, Washington, DC
