Review

99 Things Parents Wish They Knew Before Having THE Talk is an amazing source of information for anyone looking for answers to specific questions, as well as for those who are just curious about sex and all of its intricacies. As a Don in McGill Universitys Residences, I know that new college students often arrive in situations where they are in need of a solid resource for information on sex. This book is excellent in that regardit provides a quick reference in times of need, but is also a great read for anyone who is just looking for a distraction. Stories of other teenagers set the scene for a wealth of topics, making for discussions that feel relevant and comprehensible. The information is quick, easy, and to the point, and provides a unique outlook on sex and relationships, with a great sense of humor throughout. A fun read for all, but a must-read for every teenager! --Charles Walsh, Don, Gardner Hall, McGill University

Where was this book when I needed it? A mother of two young men in their twenties I could have done with this a good 10 years ago - hell I could have done with this when I was growing up. This book hits the spot - if you will excuse the punit is informative without being patronising, just funny enoughand written in language that is accessible for pretty much everyone. The early chapters focus on the really important stuff - relationships before getting into the nitty gritty of knowing your body. After that it is onwards and upwards. To quote that great Woody Allen film title, 'this truly is everything you have ever wanted to know about sex - but been afraid to ask.' The other important thing is that the authors are experts in their field - that is, they do this stuff, not just research it. So, everything that they talk about comes from experience and personal practice. Which means that it is relevant, pragmatic and real. I recommend that you buy this book and use it as a resource. You won't be sorry. --Dr Deborah Christie Reader in Pediatric and adolescent psychology Clinical lead for child and adolescent psychological service, University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Consultant Clinical Psychologist

Product Description

A new CDC report on data from numerous studies shows the sexual and reproductive health of young
people ages 10-24 remains a key public health concern.
Among the report's findings:
*Among girls ages 15-17, 30 percent reported they had engaged in sex, rising to 70.6 percent for girls
ages 18-19.
*For boys, 31.6 percent of those ages 15-17 had ever had sex, increasing to 64.7 percent of those ages
18-19.
*Almost 70 percent of teenage girls and 66 percent of boys had received instruction on birth control
methods.
*Among 18- and 19-year-olds, 49.8 percent of girls and 35 percent of boys said they had talked with
a parent about methods of birth control.
*More than 80 percent of girls and boys said they had received formal instruction before age 18 on
how to say no to sex.
*Almost 10 percent of young women ages 18-24 reported their first intercourse was involuntary.
*HIV infections among boys ages 15-19 nearly doubled in the past 10 years, from 1.3 cases per
100,000 in 1997 to 2.5 cases in 2006.
*Despite declines posted between 1997 and 2005, syphilis rates in females ages 15-19 rose from 1.5
cases per 100,000 in 2004 to 2.2 cases in 2006.
"The data presented in this report indicate that many young persons in the United States engage in
sexual risk behavior and experience negative reproductive health outcomes," said CDC. "These
findings underscore the importance of sustaining efforts to promote adolescent reproductive health."
