This album is absolutely gorgeous,

These guys are seriously my favorite band right now. This is an absolutely gorgeous compilation of music. It is deep, sorrowful, reflective, lonely, quiet, hopeful, and breathtaking. Seriously, folks. I think I even cried when I first heard this and I'm not much of a softy. I went all the way to Chicago to see these guys - they are the best undiscovered band I know. Well worth the investment. I give it 6 stars on a scale of 5.

I heard a snippet of this on NPR and, entranced by the guitar sounds, took a chance on the CD. It's like ambient Eno meets Steve Reich meets...well, layers of electric guitars (including a pedal steel), piano, bass, and drums. In spite of the electric orientation, the music is gentle, even when it builds into a rich, full palette. It's based on motifs that morph over time in an hypnotic fashion (hence the reference to Reich). My first (and momentary) impression was as if I were hearing, say, Lucinda William's band warming up but never quite getting anywhere...but I say that as a cautionary note. Once you let yourself go into the music, it will take you off at it's own relaxed speed, like an float down a slow and sweet river.
This is one of the best things I've heard in a long time.

Good for the soul,

The Six Parts Seven are a magnificent band. Non-threatening post-rock. It is subdued and the farthest thing from pretentious that one could ever hear. There are no sweeping grandiose crecendos here, just sincere instrumental music. "Things Shaped in Passing" may be there best yet, although "In the Late Style of Fire" off of "Things Shaped in Passing" is still my favorite Six parts seven song. The pieces are so textured. I have never felt so calm listening to music in my entire life. I need to see them play live. If there are any shows in the Cleveland area soon and you are near Granville, OH (Denison University), i will pay you money if you will drive me to the show. Thank you and goodnight

The Six Parts Seven take my breath away......,

This is a great album from start to finish. An instrumental album which can be described as neither post-rock nor math-rock. It is filled with guitar driven epics that are flavored with a hint of cello and piano. The songs come off unflawed and sincere, unlike some of the works of the more pretentious, so called "hip" artists, who wish they could come up with something this brilliant. No lyrics are needed!!!

Quite decent instrumental rock can sometimes be like an Explosions without the Sky, especially when dawdling away on guitar melodies that go nowhere. Usually though, all is rung in, and layered out nice enough to earn a place in your second-tier post-rock CD section.

This is a great record. Not an all time best, but it is a solid classic. If you're into instrumental and experimental such as "Explosions in the sky" "neu" then this one is for you. This one is not as loud and as experimental as the ones mentioned, but it's got some greatness.

this is, simply put, the most beautiful album i have ever heard. as calm and flowing as their music is, they exhibit a sharp intensity that is hard to match. i have had the pleasure of seeing them twice in concert, and both times were pure magic. i don't want to say anything else, because to do would not do this albums simple beauty justice. do yourself a favor today and take a few minutes to listen to the sound clips provided on this site. (they have full songs on their website as well.) if you aren't blown away by it, then i'll eat my hat.

How can you call sweeping crescendoes pretentious? I might be wrong but Beethoven employed sweeping crescendoes to his emperor concerto and I really dont think Beethoven was very pretentious considering he died broke and unrevered. Back to the point at hand, this album is dull and uneventful. It aims to be pastoral but never evokes anything from its sound beyond tepid instrumentation and monotonous, atonal undercurrents. Its slow to develop and is a far reach from average. Remember, talent does not always equate with creativity and innovation. Try Eluvium or By the End of Tonight instead, you will be much more pleased with the results.
