Haphazard Cover & Senator McCarthy, December 20, 2011
This review is from: 100 Things You Should Know About Communism - Committe On Un-American Activites (Kindle Edition)
I have not read this particular report, but have read other material from this era. My review is actually on the cover which gives a false impression that has been perpetuated for many years in the media and academia. The prominent piece on the cover of this report is the photo of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Underneath this photo is the author of this report, the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The House Committee on Un-American Activities is infamous for the Hollywood Blacklist and targeting many others during the Red Scare.
At NO TIME was Senator McCarthy EVER a member of this committee. The senator was a member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations whose focus was solely on government employees that were Communists and had infiltrated our government. I can assure that there was a genuine infiltration by the Communists of the United States government during the time of these films. It is that simple, yet every time there is a mention of propaganda against the Communists in the United States the reaction is usually two things.
One, as the author of the product description mentioned that there was an overreaction as a whole to the Communist threat. This of course is false. These reports may have been a bit cheesey and overboard, but there was a genuine threat in the United States at the time these reports were made.
Two, Senator Joseph McCarthy is brought up, along with McCarthyism and McCarthy being tied directly to the Hollywood Blacklist. This nonsense, regardless of the proof that is out there will continue to be spit out unchecked.
Even though McCarthy is one of the most prominent figures of the time, a photo of Richard Nixon and the other members of the House Committee on Un-American Activities would be more applicable.
For those interested in this time in history and in particular Senator McCarthy I suggest reading the book, Blacklisted by History.
