5.0 out of 5 stars Things that are funny...
This book is loaded with laughs. I have it on my desk at work and everyone who walks by can't help but pick it up and flip through it. Everyone has his or her favorite "Thing" that sucks! Every reader can relate. In addition, the list has a poetic rhythm that makes it all the more entertaining. You will enjoy receiving this book as much as you will enjoy sharing it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay so this doesn't suck
but it's just a book full of simple phrases of things that suck like

bar of soap breaking in half
socks falling down
underwear falling down
Michael McDonald
Applebee's

I don't think these are in the book but you get the idea. Mind you this book made me laugh and I did enjoy it - it's just not what I was expecting and that...

5.0 out of 5 stars sucks so good, March 22, 2008
i dont usually like books like this. but thats probably because most of them are trying to tell me what to be happy about forgetting one simple fact: misery makes happy. from the second i saw this book - similar in size, shape and color to maos little red book (another list of things that suck) - i had to have it and can only hope it has the same far reaching and history changing implications as maos. but honestly, the book is clever without being cloying, inventive without being crass, intimate without being creepy and sucks without sucking (plus a free cartoon. go figure.) it makes for a perfect birthday gift because, to paraphrase gore vidal, it is not enough to be happy. others must be unhappy.

True, this has "bathroom reading" written all over it, but I spend a lot of my life in that room! Kaplan's knack for spooling off a list of similar frustrations--and then jumping to a radically different--but equally annoying--apsect of life is what repeatedly brought a smile to my face. Great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not All That Sucky After All, January 3, 2011
This review is from: Things That Suck (Paperback)
"Things that Suck" is an amusing collection of a lot of everyday things that most of us have come across that really suck. The commonality of the things that are mentioned in this book, such as "losing the remote control," "never winning," "itchy wool," etc. make this not overly original book. Nonetheless, it is good to have all of these things gathered in a single place, although I am fairly confident that this is not an exhaustive collection of sucky things. Jason Kaplan has packaged these things in an innovative way - this is in fact a flip book, all of the text is located on the right-hand side (all left-hand side pages are intentionally left blank), and the small illustrations in the middle of each page form an amusing little cartoon. The book also makes for an inexpensive and amusing gift idea, or a low-key coffee-table book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomeness, April 15, 2008
By
Jason Kaplan is a comic genius. A friend of mine gave me Things That Suck after a particularly sucky week, and as I read it, I laughed out loud more times than I could count. I never thought I could be so entertained by a "mere" list. David Letterman should be ashamed of himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny, April 10, 2008
This book literally made me laugh out loud, which was a bit uncomfortable as I was attempting to read it in the midst of a meeting. Warning: Do not read this in the misdst of a meeting. You will laugh out loud, and then you will be filled with an unrelenting need to grab the person next to you and point to the line that made you laugh, see if they laugh as hard as you did, and when they do, force them to listen to you read every line you thought was funny. Again, not conducive to a meaningful meeting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, April 2, 2008

Are you freakin kidding me with this book?? So damn funny. Flip it open to any page and you'll be psyched you did, but I recommend reading it cover to cover to appreciate the rhythm of the thing. Great gift book; I bought a bunch to give out as party favors for a girls weekend away and it was a big hit.

... and I am sure there are many of them. They'll find many familiar "things that suck" in here, as well as things they never thought of. Kaplan writes in a breezy, informal style that seeks to amuse, but beware: the book periodically stops short for some serious consideration of weightier issues. There is food for thought here for the discerning reader, and social activist, perhaps.

5.0 out of 5 stars three poos, five stars!!!, April 1, 2008
I read this book in three <<ahem!>> sittings. Who woulda thought that a list (albeit, an immaculately curated list) of life's many inconveniences could be so engrossing... and thigh numbing (Mr. Kaplan forgot to include "pins and needles" on his list but i forgive him). This book is a must have for your lavatory library!

5.0 out of 5 stars Books that rock!, March 28, 2008
Favorite find this year!! Pass it along to those you love and those who do some of the sucky things in this book. It covers EVERYTHING and anything (panty crickets!) you may have thought of.... Or not thought of! So far it's an impossible challenge to find something to add to the list!
