Wonderful jazz piano trio,

This review is from: Things We Did Last Summer (Audio CD)
Bill Charlap is one of the greatest piano jazz players in the world today. His encyclopedic knowledge of the American Songbook is amazing and this disc contains a nice representative cross section. This disc is one of about five so far on the Japanese Venus label featuring the New York Trio. They are all recorded in 24 bit sound using a proprietary Hyper Magnum Sound that is so pristine it's just remarkable. Rather close miked so you get lots of details. This is an amazing and refreshing disc to wind down from the press of modern life with. I just enjoy his playing so much. Bill and company reach down into these old songs and pull out gems you haven't heard before. What finesse and refinement and sensitivity they play with, and really enjoy themselves at the same time. This is a level of jazz music you won't find often. Enjoy.

I have been listening to a lot of piano trios lately, especially Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. Bill Charlip's playing is beautiful and his improvising full of clear, gorgeously crafted solos. The bassist and drummer never get in each other's way and always support the melodies. When they solo, their work is always great. If you love piano trios full of beautiful melodies without being sappy or smarmy, buy this album.

Amazing Jazz piano trio music,

This review is from: The Things We Did Last Summer (Audio CD)
Bill Charlap is perhaps the greatest jazz pianist today. I can't get enough of him. These Japanese Venus recordings with 24 bit Hyper Magnum Sound are great, pristine and flawless, although sound very close-miked in a way that is a little unnatural. Small quibble for such fine listening pleasure. This is the fifth in a series beginning about 2001 with the New York Trio. It sure lets you hear the details and the music is wonderful. The selections here are tasteful and compatible - what a way to hear Cole Porter! Bill is up to his usual excellent form, and the trio working here plays this all Cole Porter standard session with such deep understanding of them as well as obvious enjoyment. He really does have an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz song from the American Songbook. It's great to listen to such excellent musicians having fun making great music together. If you haven't heard him before, I'd recommend starting with his latest 'Live at the Village Vanguard', which will wet your appetite for lots more. Enjoy this master of jazz song.
