5.0 out of 5 stars Legend
This band's guitarist Mato Nanji is going to be a legend and he is one of the most talented guitarists alive I think according to this album and the appearance I saw on Conan O'brian. On this album, especially on Holdin' out, he haunts me with the sounds of Hendrix and he brings to mind Stevie Ray Vaughan, only he represents both of their sounds with an all together...

3.0 out of 5 stars They have the tools, but...
Being a huge SRV and classic guitar blues fan, I was incredibly excited to get ahold of this CD I had hear so much about. I heard the 1st few songs with little excitement other than the too-short guitar solos. Then, Blues This Morning got me going. Great song! Unfortunately, the only one on the CD. This band could be great with a new singer and a real songwriter...

5.0 out of 5 stars Legend, March 15, 2000
This review is from: Things We Do (Audio CD)
This band's guitarist Mato Nanji is going to be a legend and he is one of the most talented guitarists alive I think according to this album and the appearance I saw on Conan O'brian. On this album, especially on Holdin' out, he haunts me with the sounds of Hendrix and he brings to mind Stevie Ray Vaughan, only he represents both of their sounds with an all together new talent and smooth style. There is a great mix between upbeat and melancholy tracks, this is as straightforward blues as you can find these days. I loved the entire album. Anyone who likes hendrix, clapton, Vaughan, and the blues will be pleasantly surprised. Mato -the lead and only guitarist even combines great elements of acoustic guitar overlapping on different songs. This is the best album I've heard period from front to back in months. This is just one great blues album. It is about an hour of great music. Indigenous deserves far more popularity, and you should remember Mato Nanji's name, because you'll definitely hear it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CD'S, April 10, 2003

Having read about MATO NANJI I bought this CD on hear say. Well
what a positive surprise. This has turned into one of mine and more surprisingly my wife's ( we don't often see eye to eye on musik ) favourite CD's. Everyone I've played this for has fallen
in love with this CD. My niece at 18 loves it, my wifes best friend at 55 loves it and even the disco babes in the office love it. This crosses many boundaries of musical tastes and satisfies just about everyones tastes. This is even more surprising as it is not a compromise CD in any way, it makes a statement about the ability of these talented native indians as song writers, musicians and entertainers. INDIGENOUS may be one of the most important bands to emerge out of the USA in many years. The musik leans towards the blues ( SRV and HENDRIX ) but has enough depth to [take] in even non BLUES lovers. Every song is a killer and the musik will grow on you for month on end.
A must have CD for any musik fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy of comparison to the greats, July 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Things We Do (Audio CD)
I agree with the general vote here that this is a great record - without doubt the best I've heard this year, in fact in many years. I am and have been a huge fan of Jimi and Stevie Ray, I saw both a lot - Hendrix when I was quite young, and SRV a ton of times in the 80s. The guitarist for Indigenous, Mato Nanji, is the first I've seen to be of that special top level quality - where he seems to be channeling spirits through his guitar as compared to just playing it. The man plays with soul, it is very pure and refreshing to hear - unlike so many of these "young prodigy" guiatrists major record labels keep throwing at us. Mato Nanji is a guitarist, and Indigenous a band, for the ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best NDN Band Ever! Indigeous Rules!, February 3, 2000

Anyone who does not like this album is crazy! Go out and purchase this album quick. "Things We Do" is an amazing album to listen to. The song "Things We Do" is the best song I ever heard. It also won for best music video at the AMERICAN INDIAN FILM FESTIVAL in San Francisco in 1998. I first heard of this band in 1998 and started listening to their music and haven't stopped since. I never even liked Blues/Rock, until I heard the first off of this album. Mato's magical fingers, take you beyond heaven, Pte's bass playing takes you to a whole nother lever, beyond the basic bass chords, Wanbdi play's those drums as if there were no tomorrow, and Horse pounds his percussions so fast, so good , it ain't funny. The best time to hear this band is live. So, if you have the chance to hear them live. Please don't pass it up. Or you'll be missing a good thing. And will regret it for the rest of your life. 5.0 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening!, May 3, 2000
This review is from: Things We Do (Audio CD)
This was a case of Amazon.com recommendations gone right. I read through the many reviews for this CD and got the feeling that many people were affected by it, and for good reason! They all cite the SRV influence, which is the most obvious aspect, but there is much more to this group than being Stevie Ray knock-offs. The slower numbers are affecting and soulful, and that combined with the energetic uptempo numbers make for a very well-rounded release. I reserve the five star rating for CDs which I can listen to without having to skip over any tracks, and this one falls within that category, even after several months of listening. I've bought about 30 discs since this one, but it still stays in the rotation of my changers at home, at work, and in the truck. I've already ordered their next release and am waiting anxiously for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Indian voice is being heard, December 1, 1999

I have only been a fan for a short time, these fabulous foursome have caught my ear. I've read alot of reviews about these four and have seen alot of comparison to Hendrix and Vaughn. I'm and older rocker and blues fan and there is, in my opinion no comparison to the latter two. This group has a sound of their own.I got to see them in Tulsa,Ok and they rocked the house. This is the best group of the century, but of course I am Native American Indian so I am totally biased. I still think they the best in this millenium. Thanks Indigenous.....Hope to see you again real soon

It's great when a band can take obvious influences and then add something that is all their own. Just the case with Indigenous, who take a cue from Stevie of course, but also have a certain magic that they bring to the table with it. Mato Nanji is certainly one of the best blues-rock guitarists out there today, but he's not afraid to add in more of a contemporary songwriting edge to the music. Combining acoustic work, strong melody, and the gritty "Vaughn-esque" lead work on ballads and rockers alike, they really have shown that you can take something and make it your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best find of 99, January 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Things We Do (Audio CD)
Great songs well played, especially the guitar, which is extraordinary. There is a bit of an SRV feel to it - but this ain't no tribute band.. The Live '98 record is great too, and really shows the jamming side of the band. I read that they are now working with SRV's writing partner, Doyle Bramhall Sr. - the next record should even be better - can't wait.

If you like Stevie Ray Vaughan you're gonna love these guys. They have learned their lessons and come up with something of their own; great tunes, great vocals....these guys are set to go. I hope we get to hear alot more from these folks! (Psst, they are out on tour with B.B. and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, tell you something?)
