beautiful,

This review is from: Things You Should Leave Alone (Audio CD)
it's too bad that this album and music like it does not get more attention, or maybe those of us who enjoy it like it that way. i must admit that upon first listen i thought puracane was just another faceless 'trip hop' wannabee, soon headed for the used bin. further listens have really proven me wrong. this cd runs the gamut from sweet to bitter to sad to manic, each accompanied by a rich and textured soundscape created not only by sequencers and electronics, but live instruments like a piano. these guys have an excellent sense of melody and practice subtlety in key and mood changes like pros. AND just to prove that they have excellent taste, they throw in a beautiful, albeit faithful cover of Jane's Addiction's 'summertime rolls'. i can also promise that the bjork comparisons will completely leave your mind after just a few listens. Her voice and the way she sings remind me of Sarah 'what's her name' from Dubstar. This music occupies a rare place in 'trip hop' music, between the poppy, commercial stuff like Olive and the esoteric, experimental stuff like Laika and Tricky's latest stuff. Furthermore, it's an excellent buy here on amazon, as i too have seen it in stores for ... bucks (that's how much i paid). Other surprise favorites in the same vein: Baby Fox 'a normal family', Soma Sonic 'future'.

From a Ski Movie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Things You Should Leave Alone (Audio CD)
To be honest, I originally only bought "Things You Should Leave Alone" because I heard two of the songs, "things you should leave alone" and "big day" in two ski movies, both produced by Match Stick Productions. I was anticipating a luke warm c.d with two or three really good songs worthy of listening to over and over again. I was really wrong, and pleasantly disappointed. The songs are high tech, and the vocals are really dreamy and hypnotic. The whole album is very seductive. From a skier, it is something you can ski to. It is something, with the volume up, you can run to, you can paint to, you can do anything to it. I normally don't like that kind of music, but Puracane is very good, and quirky. Their cover of Jane's Addiction "Summer Rolls" is really good. All in all, the cd is good. There are a few songs that need to be skipped over, because they are too hypnotizing. The rest are breathe taking, landscapes of music engineering and eerie vocals.

Wow. This CD is probably my fave CD out of all my CDs. It is so hypnotic and relaxing, I can listen to it what ever my mood. Ali Roger's voice is truly astonishing, and I feel like I'm in a total different dimension. Only negative thing about Puracane is that they haven't released any other album. I don't know if they are planning to or not, but I truly hope they do cuz they rock.

a cd i can't leave alone,
By
This review is from: Things You Should Leave Alone (Audio CD)
i bought this CD on a whim after hearing the title track on a compilation CD. i was very surprised when i first listened to it, it wasn't what i expected, but after going through twice i was hooked. ali rodger's voice is so amazing, and many of the tracks are so hypnotizing you've completely forgotten what the heck you were doing when they started. i highly recomend this album to any trip-hop fans who like the trip more than the hop. i hope they release something else someday, though i doubt they will. oh well, one can always hope!

Puracane is Pure Pleasure,

Too bad they don't do half stars 'cause this would get 4 1/2.These grooves are awesome, I like the combo of the rock and D-n-B grooves. Ali Rogers' vocals are smooth and just wonderful. I don't know where everyone gets the Bjork comparisions from...they are totally different styles and sounds and textures. No she doesn't sound like Beth Gibbons either...I would say if you were looking for a voice to compare with I would say Lou Rhodes from Lamb. Anyway, this album is an amazing album, the cover of Jane's Addiction's "Summertime Rolls" is worth the cost alone.

Something NEW on the ambient scene,
By
This review is from: Things You Should Leave Alone (Audio CD)
Fully satisfying ambient tunes, with a hard nosed back beat. Only thing to watch out for is the female vocal...if you do not dig a Bjorkish sounding lead then you might find it annoying. Could have done just as well without any vocal at all. All in all a surprisingly good buy. have seen it for upwards of $17.00 in stores.s_dennis@hotmail.com

heard them & seen them live,

My only complaint about this band is that they don't perform and produce enough. I was shocked when I heard them play, by the caliber of the music and their high-energy and engaging delivery. If you enjoy deep, oldschool rock like Zeppelin or Free, as well as modern electronic, you'll dig their sounds. And besides great music, it's a great looking band.

Nice cd,

First time I heard it I thought it was similar to Olive and their sound, but darker. Didn't sound like Portishead, not like Morcheeba, or Hoover. I think this cd isn't one of those things you should leave alone...

Refreshing and different, and Ali's voice rocks!,

I saw Puracane live on the Jane's Addiction tour, and they were very impressive. I bought the CD on the spot. The CD is a bit less hard-edged than the live version, which features "real" guitar and bass rather than computerized strains. But it's no less compelling, and Ali Rogers' voice is sexy and strong. (She was great in concert, too!) I don't usually like this genre that much, but I'm impressed. I'll be keeping an eye on this group.

A Great Trip-hop Album,
By Mark Colan "duke-of-url" (Medford, MA USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

I think this album shows the best of modern techno sounds, good songwriting, synthesized textures, and very nice vocals. Deep, strong, soaring. Unlike the usual techno where you set up a groove and jam with it, songs on this album have a lot of dynamic, and one song sounds different from another. After a few listens I was rewarded by finding I like nearly every song.
David Biegel seems to be the production brains behind it, and I suspect he plays most of the instruments and writes a lot of the songs. He's been around awhile; he was half of the band "Bugs" which produced one album "Infinite Syndrome". Lately he seems to have moved to production, for example working with Natalie Imbruglia on the song "Troubled by the Way" from the soundtrack to 1999's Go. Ali Rogers makes a nice complement with her vocals. I find her voice beautifully expressive and vulnerable, sometimes soft and sometimes with an edge. She sang with "Barbie Complex", on their one album "No Brain No Pain". Ali's voice is also used as an instrument through electronic modification and echo. Both are talented, and I would love it if they would get together for another album. Since this album didn't really go anywhere commercially, I suspect that is unlikely. Comparisons to other bands in the reviews are bound to fail, as Puracane and those mentioned in comparison all have their unique sounds, but they are in the same ballpark. There isn't another band that sounds quite like these guys. |
