Book Description

I have a confession to make.
I think I am in friend-love with you.

What's friend-love? It's that super-awesome bond you share with someone who makes you happy every time you text each other, or meet up for an epic outing. It's not love-love. You don't want to swap saliva; you want to swap favorite books. But it's just as intense and just as amazing.

And it's this search for that connection that comic-book artist Yumi Sakugawa captures in I Think I Am in Friend-Love with You. It's perfect if you've ever fallen in friend-love and want to show that person how much you love them...in a platonic way, of course.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I Think I am In Friend Love With You . . . chronicles a bashful cyclops with a good old fashioned friend crush. Sakaguwa's comics, while being hilarious, are imbued with a quiet magic that somehow makes a glowing computer screen as ripe with beauty and mystery as a night sky full of twinkling stars." --Huffington Post Arts

"The comic . . . expresses all the delightful, little things we hope our best . . . pals will do for us . . . [Yumi’s] work has an eerie, wondrous quality to it, blipped with panels that will make your heart soar and dip and soar again. Themes of space and love pull readers into a pensive world of fantastical creatures." --NPR’s Code Switch

"Yumi Sakugawa's small, sweet hardcover I Think I am in Friend-Love With You (Adams Media) feels so necessary. Sakugawa's one-eyed, vaguely socklike protagonist fantasizes a future of book-swapping, Tumblr post–reblogging, coffee-sipping platonic love, but reveals the most simple of needs in the book's simple black-and-white illustrations." --Bitch Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars I so know that feel December 10, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
On December 5 of 2012, I read the sweetest and most wonderful thing it has ever been my pleasure to find on the internet. Well, actually, anywhere.

Yumi Sakugawa perfectly captured how sometimes... you really, honestly, just want to be friends.

That's hard to communicate. Especially between a man and a woman. There's this fundamental belief in American society that when a man just wants to be friends, he is either lying or thinks you are fat.

53 weeks later, I have this book. It's an awesome book. I have already purchased another and sent it to someone important to me. Because I really, honestly, just want to be friends. I will probably continue doing this as necessary.

Thank you, Yumi. I can never thank you enough, but thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky-cute overload! January 2, 2014
By Cat
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This was a great stocking stuffer to go with gifts to my very dear friends. It's a very quirky book, and expresses my love for my friends quite aptly! The art is also so well done and I love that little creature-thing.

Yay! Thoroughly satisfied and would consider buying more! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Even my cynical mother enjoyed it January 7, 2014
Format:Hardcover
I like the honesty and sweetness of the book. It's unpretentious, unassuming and it's heart-warming in a real way. It's not flashy, Hollywood or even hipster. It's just awesome.

After I bought it I had it in the car and my mom picked it up and read it. In her words "this is very good." I may buy her a copy as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars So cute. December 21, 2013
By PinkCat
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I. Love. This. Book.

I'm an "ENFP" so I really resinate with the concept of "Friend Love," also known as "squishes." After I first read this I thought, "YES! SOMEONE GETS IT!" I will read this to all my non-enfp friends who need to understand how I feel about them, and how it is completely platonic.

Also, the pictures are very cute. This is such a work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars My friend love sent this to me. June 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tears of joy streaming from my eyes down my cheeks which holds a smile. This is how I felt reading this tender book, suggested to me by my friend love Molly. If you have someone in your life that touches that very special part of your heart, send this book to them and let them know just what type of friend you really are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Precious June 6, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is one of the cutest little books I've ever seen... recently, as we've been considering adopting a child, I've become more and more interested in "cartoon" books, and I've started looking at ones not geared for children (though, not inappropriate for children, really), and have fallen in love with the cuteness!!! It reminds me of the Russian Winnie the Pooh cartoons, which you can check out on YouTube... in fact, go do that now... look for Russian Winnie the Pooh on YouTube...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish someone would gift this to me May 27, 2014
By gaustin
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book exactly conveys my fears about claiming close relationships with others. It's a lovely book to give to someone you care for deeply as a friend. Strictly platonic. The drawings are fantastic - funny at times, creepy at times, and endearing. This is not a serious book but it nails the almost stalkerish sense of loneliness one feels in a sea of friendships. A highly recommend read and gift!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift for a best friend April 3, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
When I moved away from my two best friends, I knew that this gift would be perfect. It was such a nice way to tell them how much I love them. And the loved it too!! The illustrations are hilarious and adorable. And there is one drawing on each page so you can really see the detail in the book.
