Waste of paper, waste of time,

I'm halfway through the book, and this book is an empty suit. You can sum the message up in two simple sentences.
Think big. Don't think small. There, I just saved you a bunch of time, and the price of a book. Seriously, it is hard to imagine writing an entire book that just keeps repeating the same thing over and over again. Can I have a refund please?

Think Big Disappointment,

Sadly, this book was a great disappointment. Page after page was the same and there didn't seem to be anything groundbreaking here the the constant call to Think Big became annoying. Do not waste your money...if you have half a brain you are already thinking beyond this book.

Author could have said it in one page, did not need a whole book. He repeated the title over and over and over and over and over and over and over,... need I say more?

If you're interested to see how many times "think big" can be used in a sentence, this is the book for you. Alternatively, if you have no long-term memory and can only recall the last 10 words you've read, this book is for you. If you want to leverage your skills, motivations and dreams to, as a wiser man than I once said, "make no small plans" look elsewhere. (Might I suggest Tony Robbins for inspiration, David Allen for the skills to get there, and Brian Tracy to help keep your eyes and ears open along the way.) The author is clearly motivated by this and good for him. Maybe the website he mentions every few pages is wonderfully full of content with a great community of big thinkers thinking bigly with largeness of thought. But there's simply nothing in here. The book is completely empty.

I had high hopes for this book as it was bought to my attention via a Seth Godin post. Turns out to be a cheesy "you can do anything you set your mind to" piece of fluff, pages and pages of drivel. It is rare I don't finish a book I shell out my own money on, but I only got a couple of chapters into this one. After a quick flick forward to see that the rest of the book kept going down the same path I cut my losses.

If you don't like this book, you didn't try. The message is very simple.
It's not something you may not already know, but it's definately something that you should know deep down inside. The problem for me was I just hadn't been recognizing that and thus wasn't living the way I should have. This book woke me up and has inspired me. Sure Think Big seems clear, but applying the simple concept isn't always easy. The author is absolutely right when he says, "I do not think big every day. I can't. It's unlikely anyone could live by this manifesto every moment. But, I try." That's what The Think Big Manifesto does for me. I don't have to try harder... I just have to try *better*. Some people might be able to make big changes over night... Lucky them. For me though, the message to Think Big dripped into my heart slowly but surely. I starting to feel the results - how I show up every day at work, when I'm traveling, interacting with my family... and as I progress; maybe even how I affect the world... well someday maybe. If you want a "Think Big" hammer or magic wand, don't bother buying the book. But, if you want a better way of living for yourself and how you view everything around you then get this book. If you are like me you will add it to your must read (again and again) list. Every time I open up the pages of The Think Big Manifesto I'm inspired to do what I should and must. Heck, its why I wrote this review. So yeah, it is working and I am starting to *think bigger* about who I am in the world.

THIS IS A FAIRLY INSPIRING BOOK. HOWEVER, IT CONTAINS NO NEW INFORMATION. IT CONTAINS LITTLE PRACTICAL INFORMATION- JUST ANOTHER " PULL YOURSELF UP BY YOUR OWN BOOTSTRAPS" BOOK.

I read this book as a favor to a friend.
I did it to be courteous. Frankly, I was going to speed-read the book just so I honestly could say that I had read it. I am a busy guy, and I had a lot of other books that were higher on my "need to read" list. I rapidly skimmed the first 5 pages or so. Then I stopped. I went back and starting reading slowly. You see, I had that delightful experience that doesn't happen to me very often... I had run across a book that delighted me by wildly exceeding my expectations. I read a lot of "self-help" and "business philosophy" books (it's part of what I do for a living, let's leave it at that), and most of them are tripe. This book is different. Very different. While I was reading The Think Big Manifesto, I was, by turns, challenged, provoked, charmed and even once or twice annoyed. And I found myself thinking BIGGER about myself and what I bring to the world by the time I reached the last page. And not one time did Mr. Port use any of the normal "motivational speaker" tricks, nor did he trot out any over-used cliches like "your attitude determines your altitude". As I said, this book is different. A fresh view on what it means to "think bigger" (and no, this is NOT a "get rick quick" book... FAR FROM IT.) This is NOT one of those ephemeral "little books" that come and go like a fad; yes, you CAN read it in a couple of hours. But it will stick with you much longer. And if you're like me, you'll find yourself reading it a second time, with a pen and notebook at your side. Highest recommendation!

Unfortunately, this book can't seem to get past vague generaities. There aren't enough examples, stories, parallels to make this book interesting. I made myself read to the halfway point, but couldn't go any further. The premise of the book is good, and the first couple of chapters are encouraging. However, the books never seems to get out of the "Rah, Rah, Rah!" stage. I would like to have read more about people who took this encouragement and turned it into something that I can relate to, something we all can use as a motivating force. |
