More About the Author

NAPOLEON HILL (1883-1970) is one of the founding fathers of the self-motivation movement. His "Think and Grow Rich!" is one of the most widely acclaimed, influential books on success ever published. It has sold an estimated 40 million copies and has never been out of print since it was first published in 1937. (A foundation Hill established estimates more than 100 million copies.) Hill was a protege of industrialist Andrew Carnegie, an informal adviser to Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and author of more than 30 books and other materials. He founded "Success Unlimited" magazine with his long-time collaborator W. Clement Stone. His signal works are "Think and Grow Rich!", "The Law of Success," and "Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude" (with Stone). He was a Virginia native and in his retirement years, a South Carolina resident.

ROSS CORNWELL (1945-__ ) compiled and annotated this new edition of "Think and Grow Rich!" after five years of research. Like Hill, he has South Carolina roots. He was educated at Davidson College, Stanford University, and is a graduate of the Goethe Institut (Ebersberg, Germany). He was the first editor-in-chief of "Think & Grow Rich Newsletter" and is the author or editor of numerous books, instructional materials, national newsletters, and videos, one of which -- "With the Mind of a Child" -- won top awards at two major international festivals. His background includes work as a journalist and columnist, communications specialist, consultant, and publisher. Earlier in his career, he was Executive Assistant to the President of Clemson University.

I was introduced to "Think and Grow Rich!" by an alcoholic member of our cemetery sales team. I had a wife and three children at the time, and we were just barely making it. My only source of income was the commissions I made knocking on doors selling cemetery property, and they were hard to come by, especially since almost nobody was a permanent resident in the Miami area.

Reading "Think and Grow Rich!" gave me a crutch to lean on as I forced myself out to pound those doors where the potential prospects were. If my family was going to eat, I had to convince people to buy cemetery property 30 or 40 or more years before they would need it. The Six-Step Success Formula the book contains helped me to realize that there was a way even for an uneducated lunkhead like me to make it like the big guys. I followed the success formula faithfully, and, lo and behold, my whole life turned around.

Two of my most useful tools in the book are the poem "My Wage" ("I bargained with Life for a penny...") and "If You Think You Are Beaten" ("Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man..."). I truly believe that Dr. Hill has the same message the Bible has for us. It was just little easier for me to apply. I went on to build the largest cemetery organization in the country starting out from my basement on Concord Avenue in Anderson, S. C. In 1970, we sold 30 cemeteries to Service Corporation International, making it possible for them to become the largest funeral-cemetery company in the world. I served as President of their Cemetery Division for three years.

I'm now 82 years old, living comfortably on the shores of Lake Hartwell with my wife of 62 years.

I have read many hundreds of books over the past 14 years in my quest for success. "Think and Grow Rich" stands at the top. It has made a positive impact on my life that is second to none. To the degree that I have applied the principles in this book, I have reaped incredible results.
As I was going through this new edition for the first time, I was comparing it to an old original edition that I have. The editor, Ross Cornwell, has stayed true to the original, especially compared to some other editions. It is amazing to me some of the text that was left out of the other editions. Some of that information is incredibly powerful.
I can imagine how difficult it was to revise the book while staying true to Napoleon Hill. We all have our biases and opinions. I don't necessarily agree with every thing Napoleon Hill said, but when I read "Think and Grow Rich," I want to trust that I am reading what Hill meant to say and not what someone thought he meant or thought he should have meant.
The sad part is when someone comes across one of the other editions, they will read it and not really be reading the true "Think and Grow Rich," and they won't even know it. This new edition has done it justice, and where the editor interpreted
what Hill meant or would mean (in the endnotes), he clearly states this, and that is key.
I believe Mr. Cornwell is doing a great thing by getting this information out there in its true and intended form for other people, because the principles explained in this book have produced, in me, an inner strength and confidence that has allowed for massive growth in all areas of my life. I have a long way to go to reach my full potential, but these principles have put me on the upward path. I truly believe I can become and achieve anything I TRULY desire because of what I learned from "Think and Grow Rich!".

"Think and Grow Rich" has been around since 1937. And most who have read earlier versions have read the 1960 edition.

I was introduced to the 1960 edition during an Anthony Robbins seminar, many years ago. And I must say that I had evolved so much while reading that earlier edition that reading Ross Cornwell's restored and revised edition led me to look more closely for what is different about a book that had guided me many years ago to evolve in ways that were beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

How this restored and revised edition is different:

1. Appendices (Hill's bio, tributes and other work)

2. Easily accessible endnotes that explain more about Napoleon Hill and those who influenced this success philosophy

3. Changed some words throughout book, for clarity

"Think and Grow Rich" is a 13-step process to success and riches. It is also a philosophy of individual achievement that guides readers to "follow what you demand of life."

To this day, my favorite example in this book of how money can be made is the after-dinner speech presented by Charles M. Schwab to John Pierpont Morgan.

In this speech, and all that followed to the close of the deal, there are lessons of determination, persistence, unspoken corporate political rules and other power games that led to the United States Steel Corporation to be born when everyone thought it couldn't be done.

And my two favorite quotes from this book are:

"You are the master of your fate, the captain of your soul." And, "You are never ready for a thing until you believe you can acquire it."
