One of golf's greatest joys,
By Lorin Anderson (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Think Like a Caddie...Play Like a Pro: Golf's Top Caddies Share Their Winning Secrets (Hardcover)
There really aren't many more enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon than to play golf with a caddie. When the caddie is well-trained and knows every nuance on the course, it is an almost magical experience and often leads to some of a golfer's better scores. This is simply because golfers generally don't do a very good job of on-course decision making in the heat of the battle. A calm, thoughtful caddie can make all the difference in the world in avoiding the usual mistakes that drag down a potentially good round.
Think Like a Caddie, Play Like a Pro explains how a good caddie will elevate your strategy and decision-making prowess while playing and shows the steps to thinking more like an experienced caddie even when you don't have one at your side. Interspersed are many interesting and, sometimes, emotional stories about the game's best caddies and their long-time associations with the game's best players. Anyone who enjoys working to reach their potential in golf, will enjoy the many insights in Think Like a Caddie. Your game will definitely improve if you incorporate these tricks of the caddie trade.

Over the years I have acquired a nice collection of golf books, from coffee table photo books to pocket size tip sheets. Many are devoted to various individual aspects of the game - "See it and sink it" or "Cure your slice forever." This is the first I've read that turns to Caddies to reveal their winning strategies. Of course I'm predisposed to appreciate the caddie's point of view, I got my first exposure to golf as a new caddie at Worcesster Country Club a long time ago. I spared the members by retiring after a couple of summers and not much success. Over the years I've always appreciated a good caddie. One memorable exchange at Winged Foot, "Hand me the driver." "You're not hitting driver on this hole," saith the caddie. And I didn't, fortunately.
Mr. Bartlett has done a marvelous job capturing the tour caddie's view of the game. I especially appreciated the mental coaching, pshycho-theraputic really, that the tour pros receive. The book chronicles how a pro caddie makes a game plan and how you can too. Great words of advice on achieving a quiet mind and a positive attitude. The book itself has a rich feel, with lovely high quality paper, especially evident in the sharp photos of the PGA tour. I recommend you give it a read and add it to your collection. Soon you'll have your own mental caddie telling you to leave the driver in the bag. |
