4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Classic.. Best of late 70's Disco-Soul, January 23, 1999
By
This review is from: Think It Over (Audio CD)
I shockingly found this CD issue on another website and purchased it, but to review it...FAB! Cissy's THINK IT OVER was a statement in the late 70's. We all know her as Whitney's mom, but Cissy was first. Where do you think Whitney got the voice? This album can prove that.

The album is complete with all tracks from the original release, except the title track is the 8:03 remix after this album was repacked by Columbia with 4 extended versions of tunes and retitled WARNING-DANGER CISSY HOUSTON. Once you start listening to all the tracks, you just want to get up and boogie to the dance tracks and melt into the heartfelt ballads (After You and I Just Want to Be With You). The additional bonus tracks are pulled from the Private Stock album issued the year previous to THINK IT OVER, titled simply CISSY HOUSTON (green cover). These are the best of all from that album, especially Love Is Something That Leads You. I am hoping that MIL Multimedia will take the balance of that album, plus future tracks recorded for 1980's STEP ASIDE FOR A LADY and give Cissy her full justice with the best of her late 70's-early 80's magic. She brought down the house with her shows at the Bottom Line and Mikell's in NYC during this time, and prepared Whitney for the musical journey she is on now. Whitney sang back up on these albums, plus in these shows, and added an extra punch to what Mom already gave to the audience when she did a brief solo.

Take this one home and put it in your constant play stack. Enjoy!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Seventies Disco and Soul, July 1, 2004

Before Whitney there was Cissy Houston! Produced and arranged by Michael Zager, a disco genius of the 1970s, Think It Over is a nice mix of dance numbers and soul ballads.

The title track is a real stunner, a disco masterpiece with a powerful hook and rousing vocals. Love Don't Hurt People is a gentle and tuneful ballad with an impressive orchestral arrangement and moments of great vocal virtuosity. Somebody Should Have Told Me is an uptempo disco ballad and After You a slow song with beautiful piano.

Warning - Danger is a real disco stomper with a marvelous rhythm break whilst I Just Want To Be With You is a soulful torch song and Umbrella Song has a calypso feel. Sometimes is another torch song and I Won't Be The One another uptempo disco ballad.

This CD release contains extra tracks which make it value for money. Although never a big star like Donna Summer or Gloria Gaynor, Cissy Houston had her moments. I recommend Think It Over to those who are nostalgic for the disco era.

Any person led to this album by Michael Zager's reputation as producer may be disappointed. There are only 3 dance tracks here. 6 tracks emulate the soul ballads of The Stylistics. 2 are gospel-style ballads. The album as a whole evokes Dionne Warwick's work with the Spinners, although Cissy's vocal style is huskier and more church-rooted than her niece's.

Cissy Houston's Think It Over cd is da bomb. I, for one, love the old school disco and this cd definately makes you want to boogie!

Wow, what a voice. The fruit didn't fall far from the tree where Cissy & Whitney are concerned.

You don't even have to think it over, this is a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soulful splashes of disco, April 27, 2011
This review is from: Think It Over (Audio CD)
The price on this always scared me...so imagine my surprise when I saw "Cissy Houston featuring Whitney Houston "Love Is Holding You"" in the shop for $5 ! I thought, it would have to be bad 90s remakes...but nope, it was the Michael Zager produced tracks from the late 70s! Score!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dont Think it over, September 20, 2003

Buy this cd. Cissy has incredible power and range. Her voice fits any style. From disco to light pop. Her gospel trained vocals power through uptempo jams like "Think it over", "Somebody should have told me", and "Warning-Danger". The ballad "Love is holding on" is a winner. Its a tugging heartfelt song that is a standout. Their are some mis-stpes. "The Umbrella Song" is terrible. Other than that the rest can be tolerated. Cissy Houston has a unforgettable voice. This cd shows you shes not just Whitney's mother. She was a great vocalist in her own right! Sing on.

Throughout her long and distinguished career, from her teen years with The Drinkard Singers to her time as leader of The Sweet Inspirations (probably the most-utilized session group in the industry during the '60s), to her solo recordings and live shows, Cissy Houston has never settled for anything less than excellence in her material and performance. A tough taskmaster as well, she, more than anyone else, is responsible for her daughter, Whitney's, phenomenal rise to superstardom. But listen to these tracks and ask yourself why Cissy wasn't a superstar as well. The voice will overwhelm you. Her work with Michael Zager, who produced most of these sides, is some of her finest, and we can only hope that more of the tracks from her first album with him might eventually be re-released. In the meantime, enjoy this!
