More than just a weight loss book,
By Sk8Fan (Washington State) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Think Yourself Thin: The Visualization Technique That Will Make You Lose Weight (Paperback)
This is the best book on weight loss that I have ever read, and believe me I've read literally dozens. I'm the master of the quick fix, and have tried most diets out there. This book isn't just for weight loss, it's about an all over attitude change relating to WHY the weight is there and HOW to change your mental focus towards positive thinking to get rid of the weight and keep it off. For all of you out there who, like me, have berated yourselves about your weight or have ever labeled yourself negatively because of it, this book is for you. It's helped me raise my self-esteem in a way I haven't been able to do in 20 years. Debbie Johnson takes you through a step by step process including affirmations, journalling with specific questions and instructions, visualization and more. She doesn't just talk around the issue, she gives concrete steps to take. No matter how much weight you'll lose, this book will also help you to accept yourself and change negative thinking into positive thinking. And you ARE what you THINK! So think THIN! At the end of this book, she states that this process can be used for anything - love, money, career, relationships, even other types of addictions. I believe it wholeheartedly. This is the best money you'll ever spend on a self-help book.

It's about time we felt good about ourselves,
By anon (san francisco, ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Think Yourself Thin: The Visualization Technique That Will Make You Lose Weight (Paperback)
As a person who's been struggling with weight issues all my life, I'd like to recommend this book by Debbie Johnson. A year ago I reached my goal weight of 135 lbs, and I was actually told I looked 120 lbs. You would think I'd be pleased with myself and celebrate my new-found body, right? Well, no. I stared at myself in the mirror, still considered myself fat, and began to pick at "flaws" on my body. A year later, I re-gained 40 lbs. If any of you have experienced this scenario, then you should read Debbie's book. She emphasizes the psychological issues that overweight people suffer. Johnson's insights can explain why I gained my weight back: I had a poor self-image despite having reached my goal weight. Because of a lack of love and even self-loathing towards myself and my body, I was susceptible to gaining my former weight back, which happened like clockwork. My poor self-image produced an enormous amount of anxiety and stress which provides the psychological framework for gaining weight. Johnson's visualization techniques are simple: If you imagine yourself fat, your subconscious will create hunger to feed this image. If you imagine yourself thin, your subconscious will reorganize itself to maintain your thinness and help you find ways to maintain that image. At that point Johnson postulates that your body will reorganize your bodily functions and metabolism to let go of excess weight. I was a strict disciplinarian who used an enormous will-power to lose weight, but discipline and self-denial aren't the qualities that help long-term weight loss and maintainance, and if you deep down believe you're fat, will-power and discipline cannot erase that fear. According to Johnson, will power is not as powerful as the imagination that ultimately helps you to visualize your ideal image which in turn aids you in appreciating your body. Johnson's visualization technique helps you affirm yourself in the now and trains you to see yourself in your ideal body. In doing so, your subconscious will be fed with positive images of your present self which will in time help you develop your own system of weight loss and not anyone else's. Those of you who have done the Atkins diet, weight-loss programs, and others know that there isn't one system that works for each and every one of our particular bodies. Johnson's techniques will help you find your own personal system that will give you guided signals on what to eat and which exercises to partake via *natural* and not coerced means. Johnson is right: There is no one system that works for millions of overweight people. Dogmatic weight loss systems might help us in a short amount of time but "abandons" us eventually, as Johnson insightfully notes. As I look at my pictures from a year ago, I am shocked to see how thin I was. But I certainly didn't think I was thin because of the psychological issues involved in it. I kept focusing on my physical flaws and thought myself as a "fat" person, and I certainly wasn't. Thinking yourself fat is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Likewise, thinking yourself thin is also a self-fulfilling prophecy, and it's up to you to choose how to perceive yourself. Ultimately, I realize now that self-love and self-image are the most important components on long-term weight loss and maintainance. Johnson's book will explain to you in detail how restructuring our own psychology is the most vital aspect of losing weight.

The Last Weight-Loss Book You Will Ever Buy,
By Lucita Bonita (NYC, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Think Yourself Thin: The Visualization Technique That Will Make You Lose Weight (Paperback)
Anybody who understands how the mind works will find the principles outlined in this book to be sound. Johnson doesn't just explain how to lose the weight, but WHY it is there in the first place. Her technique is one of healing the mind-body relationship and making life changes from the source: which is YOU. I've already changed my body considerably through the use of hypnosis, so I already knew it would work. However, hypnosis doesn't address the entire situation and I stopped making progress until I discovered this book. I didn't believe it until I tried and proved to myself how much control I have over my appearance. This is a very liberating experience and I honestly can't recommend this book enough.

Excellent guideline for feeling positive and carefree.,

This program helps you internalize your desires. Anyone who has ever taken a sales course or seminar will truly relate to this book. It makes so much sense. However, don't be fooled that it will be easy. The concept is easy, but getting rid of your negative thoughts has its challenges. I have been doing her mental exercises for 4 months and have lost a dress size without any 'dieting'. In fact, this is the first time I have stopped dieting in 3 years and have had a significant weight loss. [One of the exercises is throwing out your scales, so I have no idea how many pounds I have lost.] I feel this program is exactly what I needed. Of course, permanent weight control is not accomplished in a few minutes, but positive changes will begin immediately in your mind and does soon follow with shaping your physical reality. It has been the answer for me on how to win the mental game of weight control.

The true secret to becoming and staying thin!,

This review is from: Think Yourself Thin: The Visualization Technique That Will Make You Lose Weight (Paperback)
This is a wonderful, wonderful book!! I can't recommend it highly enough! Several years ago I lost thirty pounds using a method I devised myself which included counting calories and also making a treasure map of my goal weight and self-image (a treasure map is a kind of a scrap book you create yourself with positive pictures, phrases, etc. that support the goal you are trying to achieve). At the time I gave all the credit for my weight loss to counting calories, and NOT to the treasure map (which I discontinued) and over the years I have gained back all 30 pounds, even though I have tried every diet imaginable! I recently discovered "Think Yourself Thin" and upon reading it I realized that my prior weight loss was NOT due to counting calories, it had everything to do with the treasure map I made -- so I immediately started following Debbie's suggestions (along with restarting a NEW treasure map!) and the very next morning when I looked in the mirror, I looked thinner! I've been following her book & working on my journal/treasure map and already my clothes are much looser and I'm fitting into smaller sizes! I'm looking forward to being thin again, now that I know the TRUE secret to becoming and staying thin!! Not only is it easy, it's fun (well, it's not always easy to counter-act the negative thoughts -- but Debbie guides you through handling that, too!) Anyone wanting to lose weight once and for all should give this book a try!!

A must-have for all interested in changing their lives!,

This review is from: Think Yourself Thin: The Visualization Technique That Will Make You Lose Weight (Paperback)
I have to admit that I was skeptical when I first picked up Debbie Johnson's book a month or so ago, but can now testify that her techniques do indeed work! The visualization exercises can be used to apply to any and all areas of one's life, and I feel that they are already helping me reach my fitness peak faster. I have reread this book *five* times thus far. . .the motivational value is outstanding. As a result, I have bettered myself not only physically, but mentally and spiritually, as well. If there's any room in your life for inspiration (and I guarantee you there is), there's room in your library for THINK YOURSELF THIN!

Changed my life !!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Think Yourself Thin (Audio Cassette)
This book really changed my life. As other reviewers have noted, it is not just about weight loss, it is about changing the way we think. The author builds on the premise that "We are what we think we are." Too many overweight people think of themselves as fat and ugly. How does this help? It doesn't. It only tells the subconscious to keep perpetuating that notion, and as it relates to food, to feed that image. Heavy people need to feed their subconscious with positive images of themselves. The author is right - once you do that, the conscious will find a way. Another reviewer said that you actually have to work at it, you can't just visualize. This person missed the point. If you redirect your subconscious, your conscious will initiate the work. For example, I suddenly found myself prompted to look at nutritional labels, reduce my portions, pass on the bread and desert, ask restaurants to prepare my food special, found myself more inclined to take the stair case in lieu of the elevator, etc etc. My entire way of thinking changed. The unnatural became natural for me. A rice cake sounded like a pretty good snack after all. IF YOU NEED HELP WITH YOUR EATING AND YOUR WEIGHT, PLEASE ORDER THIS BOOK!!! AND, DO THE VISUALIZATION EXERCISES REGULARLY AND FAITHFULLY!!! IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE, I PROMISE!! This book is the answer that will turn your life around. Will power doesn't work. Let your subconscious do all the hard work for you. Good luck, and many blessings as you start your new life after reading this book. P.S. - I think I've read every book on the market and there isn't another one like this.

This review is from: Think Yourself Thin (Audio Cassette)
This is the most valuable book I've ever read to help me understand and control my life not just my weight. I can't stop reading and re-reading it. I carry it with me everywhere I go. I was carrying around alot of extra weight and tried almost everything. Including "Phen-Fen". Now with medical problems, there are alot of things I can't do to lose weight. But this book has opened my mind to all the possibilities. I've been losing steady now for over eight months. My whole outlook on all areas of my life have improved greatly. I love it, I live it.

Not A Quick Fix...But It Really Works!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Think Yourself Thin (Audio Cassette)
I bought this tape about three years ago. I listened to it -- and agreed with many of the points the author made. I did not completely believe that changing my thoughts would impact my weight loss. However, it had a major impact. The more positive I started thinking, the more positive I starting acting. The end result after two years was that I lost 100 pounds -- down to a size 8/10. Unfortunately, I gained 50 pounds during my pregnancy. I did not listen to the tape in 1 1/2 years. I just re-discovered the tape and have started listening to it again. Already, I am starting to feel different. This is not a quick weight loss approach, but it has been the only thing that has worked for me in 20 years of struggling with weight.

Give it a chance!,

This review is from: Think Yourself Thin: The Visualization Technique That Will Make You Lose Weight (Paperback)
Put skepticism aside and give this book a shot! Like most things, you get out of it what your willing to put into it. If you do the exercises consistently, you'll see results. It's particularly helpful for those like myself who have food addictions. This is the first time in my life that I don't live for sugar, and yet neither do I deprive myself of my favorite treats. I'm just able to eat them in moderation like normal people. As for things that are truly unhealthy (ie queso dip made from a brick of processed cheese!), I no longer have a desire to eat them. It's amazing how your body takes over in its own best interest without any pain or suffering on your behalf; it takes only the investment of a little time each day. This isn't a diet, it's a positive lifestyle change, and benefits more than just your appearance. You can apply these principals to every area of life, and Ms. Johnson's gentle inclusion of spiritual principles is a definite bonus. It makes you a better and more complete person, and, unlike a few other reviewers, I think the narrative voice is perfect for its purpose: simple, honest, straightforward and upbeat.
