BIG activities engage little learners with this complete curriculum for science, math, literacy and language.

BIG is powerful. Children want to be BIG. They want to do BIG. They love enormous numbers like a hundred million billion and long words like “tyrannosaurus rex.” They love to spread their arms wide and run as fast as they can. Thinking BIG, Learning BIG is filled with BIG activities to engage the imaginations of young children.

Children learn best by seeing, feeling, and doing. Making things on a grand scale enhances their understanding. When children build a giant spider with eight legs and eight eyes, and a giant fly with six legs and two eyes and two wings, children can experience the difference between spiders and flies, that they are not just “bugs.” BIG creations are more fun, more memorable, and therefore, more educational.

The chapters are organized by topic, with activities that build science, math, literacy and language skills, which form a solid foundation for future learning. The information and activities align with the standards set by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the International Reading Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English. The BIG Connections section presents ways to integrate the topic throughout the curriculum—in sensory experiences, art, music, dramatic play, and gross motor skills.

Thinking BIG, Learning BIG offers BIG fun and BIG learning!

More About the Author

I love helping children make discoveries, and showing teachers and parents how they can help children make discoveries, too. I'm known as Teacher Marie at the Mountain View Parent Nursery School in California. In my class of four- and five-year olds we explore a huge variety of questions - from how water flows to how far toy cars can travel on bumpy roads.

Teaching is my second career. I started out as a journalist writing about education, child development and parenting for newspapers and magazines. I was extremely fortunate that when I made the leap to teaching I was able to join the experienced team at the same school my two boys and I had participated in when they were young. I was so impressed with the learning taking place in our preschool program I said, "We should write a book."

You can guess what happened. I got to write that book with help from my assistant teacher, Tim Dobbins, and children's librarian Bobbi Weesen-Baer. We are thrilled that Gryphon House published Thinking BIG, Learning BIG: Connecting Science, Math, Literacy and Language in Early Childhood, and it won the Learning Magazine 2011 Teachers' Choice Award.

Educators often talk about the importance of hands-on activities. Teacher Tim and I encourage children to experience arms-on, legs-on whole-child learning. When they are curious about spiders, we build a giant spider web from string and tape. When they imagine they are outer space adventurers we turn the sandbox into the moon and explore how craters are formed. We incorporate math through games, build vocabulary by acting out words with American Sign Language, create large-scale art and dictate stories. The directions for these explorations and hundreds more are in the book, along with lots of tips I wish I'd had when I began teaching. You can see photos from our classroom at www.facebook.com/thinkingBIGlearningBIG.

Librarian Bobbi provides annotated lists of quality fiction and non-fiction books for each topic covered in Thinking BIG, Learning BIG, which she updates at www.thinkingBIGlearningBIG.com.

I enjoy speaking and giving workshops at national, state and local venues. Teacher Tim and I will present at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in Orlando, Florida, in November, 2011.

My husband and I like to hike, bicycle and do photography. Our two sons are really BIG now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big fun and Big learning. Can't wait to try it all!, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Thinking BIG, Learning BIG: Connecting Science, Math, Literacy, and Language in Early Childhood (Paperback)
I just received my copy of "Thinking Big, Learning Big" and was impressed by the range of fun activities that envelope a child's imagination in learning math, science, and language skills. I'm a big proponent of kids learning from doing/seeing/feeling, and this book does that and more. When children build a giant spider and then a giant fly, they find out that these creatures are quite different and not just "bugs" -- something many adults haven't even learned yet! :o) I'm looking forward to working with kids on roads, ramps, bridges, and tunnels. After that, inventions. I think my favorite will be light, color, and rainbows. The author, Marie Evitt, really allows kids to jump in and think in big ways while learning from big activities. I like the back cover of the book where it says this book offers BIG FUN and BIG LEARNING! I agree! Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thinking BIG is what I needed, November 14, 2009

This review is from: Thinking BIG, Learning BIG: Connecting Science, Math, Literacy, and Language in Early Childhood (Paperback)
Thinking BIG, Learning BIG: Connecting Science, Math, Literacy, and Language in Early Childhood was my summer reading and it became September`s lesson plans. This book of activities reinvigorated my thinking. Aligned with national standards in reading, literacy, math, and science, Thinking BIG helps me see where the science activities I know and love can incorporate more language and math goals. With intriguing, classroom-tested activities which are insightful about children's desire to explore and imagine, Evitt also meets teachers' needs for activities which are possible, teach concepts, and come with detailed directions for how to implement. Her approach expanded my thinking--although I usually think of sprouting seeds as an early spring activity, Evitt explains that children are curious about the seeds they discover in fall from flowers and inside apples and pumpkins. The playful spirit throughout the book is so enjoyable--predicting how far popcorn will fly, playing air hockey, and making a giant rainbow! The authors understand that children are attracted to all things BIG and they will remember the concepts they learn through those activities!
Here's what I found especially useful in Thinking BIG, Learning BIG: Movement ideas, insights into children's thinking, teacher-to-teacher tips, games, book lists with full descriptions, language and math goals, skills assessments, and Discussion Starter questions. So many good ideas!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Early Childhood Educators, October 16, 2009
This review is from: Thinking BIG, Learning BIG: Connecting Science, Math, Literacy, and Language in Early Childhood (Paperback)
O.K.,I have to be honest. I know the authors. In fact, my daughter was in their class four years ago. I've seen the curriculum in this book first hand, and it simply works. As a former educator and now a parent, I appreciate curriculum that is exciting, engaging, thought-provoking, and open-ended. While volunteering in their classroom I had the opportunity to both observe and participate in the activities included in the book. Parents, teachers, and educators of young children should not miss this book. Every "Big" concept and every "Big" activity has been tried, tested, reworked, and presented to you in an easy to read and follow format. This is not just a book full of fun activities for kids (although the children will definitely be having fun). The book is purposefully written to help guide both teachers and children through careful and meaningful thinking, exploring, experimenting, and growing. Hooray for Teacher Marie and Teacher Tim!
