This review is from: Thinking Out Loud (Audio CD)
SHORT:
the guy's a sincere, authentic community leader who has great stories to tell and a great way of telling them. This is a powerful, sweet, solid album. If you like accessible, authentic artistry, sick lyrics, rhymes and rhythms backed by sweet beats, you'll probably like this album. a lot. ----------------------- LONG: Portland, OR veteran emcee Mic Crenshaw starts off strong, and gets better from there. I learned how sick the beats are during my first few listens in a group/work setting where MC was playing in the background. The beats are diverse, and uniformly great. Many sound like they use live musicians (very tastefully!), which adds a lot of raw depth. After taking a bit of time to listen more closely to MC's delivery, I find myself grinning to certain parts now, such as ---------------------------- "Let's take something primitive and make it intellectual/ the roots of white supremacy? definitely sexual" ---------------------------- Not only is he slamming white supremacists below the belt, he is invoking an analysis of the intersection between racism and sexism (intellectual). These types of cleverly-delivered insights are commonplace on the album. The album also has some great collaborations with other artists, but MC does most of the spitting by far, and his vision and delivery stay center stage. Subjects range from the personal to the political. Some of the best stuff I've heard out there. Love the beats and the message, and it sounds like MC's voice was made to spit. MC's rhymes are immediately accessible for more casual listening, and have authenticity and depth of experience to them. It's a thought provoking, entertaining, energizing album from start to finish.
