Janine Boldrin trimmed down the fat to bring you a simple, enjoyable and easy to digest collection of sound advice on the most common purchasing challenges military families face in "The Thinking Spouse's Guide to Military Life: How to Make Better Buying Decisions for Your Mobile Family".

The first challenge Boldrin tackles is HOUSING. She makes a vital warning about not getting stuck with a house because you believed your lender when they implied you could afford a home solely because they pre-approved you for a loan. Homeownership can be a great investment and learning experience if chosen wisely, but it's not for everyone for a large number of factors Boldrin shares.

Varoom... having a vehicle is a requirement for most Americans today. Boldrin is smart to focus on this topic in Chapter 2 as it can be the second most expensive purchase families have besides housing. Like fashion, many people allow their self-confidence to be boosted by the car they drive. As a result, too many people end up buying more of a car than they need or buying a car that isn't realistic for their current or future needs. She thoughtfully points out several factors that you should evaluate before deciding to purchase a vehicle. Similar to home buying, she stresses the importance of doing your homework. Comparison shop and let your fingers do the walking online before you even step foot into a dealer. Similar to Boldrin's car buying experience, I've walked away from a deal on the perfect-for-my-family, barely used mini-van that I felt so right about. It resulted in the dealer running after us proposing the deal we were looking for.

Admit it, most of us LOVE decorating our new homes. It's one of the things I most enjoy about a transient military lifestyle.
