It is particularly encouraging that the contributors belong to the younger generation of Orthodox scholars: they are proof that the future of Orthodox thinking in the West is in good hands. We Orthodox like to speak of ourselves as the Church of Holy Tradition: this book shows exactly how Tradition can and should be both living and creative. --Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia

Orthodox and other Christians will find in these pages many new insights and perspectives to meditate upon, to treasure, and to pass on. --Albert J. A fascinating and diverse range of topics is discussed in this book. They are of varying quality and varying readability, but I think any reader will find several essays of interest to them.

It is good to see voices within Orthodoxy speaking about many issues which many Orthodox today, myself included, are wrestling with.

The book is problematic because of some underlying pre-suppositions. Here's what I think they are:

-Many of the authors have a perception of a problem with the Faith as it is, and a solution (of their own making, eg. Karras', and Skedros' article.) Karras' asks that at least the question of women's ordination at be kept open (presumably so it can be achieved later if not in the near future). One quote I remember of Elder Paisios' is that when the Faith is studied it must be done in an objective manner, that is, without a view to be self-serving.

-The subjects being studied are done in with complete deference to scholars, including heterodox scholars. Any non-scholarly lay or monastic contribution is ignored, even the modern saints. Along with such an exclusive focus on "early" and "ancient" Christianity (apart from a sociological treatment the church today) it seems to be the denial of the continuity of the same spirit of our church from Pentecost to the present day.

-There is great use of terms foreign to our Faith to describe and delineate the subjects discussed. The authors freely borrow from sociology. I think a synthesis between the greater themes of sociology and our faith is just not possible. Anton C. Vrame attempts to classify Orthodox Faith into 4 different political "Orthopraxys" (a novel twist on the term) similar to how modern Judaism is classified. The 4 "Orthodpraxys" he comes up with are, Reconstructionist, Reform, Traditional, & Ultra-Conservative/Fundamentalist. The terms Liberal and Conservative are tossed around some times (even in our own churches) to describe Christian camps.
