Book Description

May 1999
Perhaps the first book of it's kind written especially for young people, Thinking Tools for Kids describes the everyday challenges of grade school children which can be solved by a variety of quality tools. Each chapter starts out with a story that presents a problem that a child may encounter, such as an unsuccessful science fair project. The authors explain which tools can be used to overcome these problems, and give examples of how to apply these tools to other problems the children may encounter. The many illustrations and helpful glossary will aid in the understanding of the tools used throughout the book. At the end of each chapter the authors give a "home connection" which encourages kids to take what they have learned and apply it to problems at home.

Beginning with an introduction to parents and teachers, the authors first summarize the book and explain how best to use it. Next, they identify the different categories of tools used in their teaching, and offer many examples and activities to aid in the students' learning. Finally, they suggest other books that may be of interest to the readers, and provide a glossary that will help the parents and teachers better understand the material.

Thinking Tools for Kids includes many activities, illustrations, and stories to help the students understand the quality tools they are using. The activities are conveniently provided on perforated pages so teachers may remove, copy and distribute pages to the students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful and smart approach to classroom learning, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thinking Tools for Kids: An Activity Book for Classroom Learning (Paperback)
This book is an absolute delight; the stories (I particularly enjoyed the fun story about Michael and his ancestry and the story about Charlie and Emma) are well told and perfectly introduce each thinking tool. My fourth-graders will undoubtedly enjoy this text. Thank you, Barbara Cleary, Sandy Duncan, and Linda Kretzler, for a wonderful resource!

Some good ideas for me to try in the classroom. The book does seem a bit dated to me.
