With this visually stunning primer, designers will develop the skills and vision to produce truly innovative, eye-catching type design. All of the basics about type design are covered and in-depth information is provided on more advanced topics such as the differences between type applications, how typography creates identity, and what readers look for and respond to. Using more than 2,000 images from the 18th century up to the present day, this book can be used as a first exposure primer for students and as a reader for professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read on type, January 2, 2007

This is one of those books that every designer should have read and probably own. It contains a lot of useful information including history, theory, application, a lot of examples, and a fair share of philosophical food for thought.

I would recommend it as a great addition to any design library, and for students as a follow up to a basic book on type.

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm returning for different book on type, November 3, 2007
By

This review is from: Thinking in Type: The Practical Philosophy of Typography (Paperback)
This book seems to give a good history of type, but was hard to read for me. Pages were very busy with lots of sidebars, making it difficult to read, and many good layout examples were small and in black and white. I'm returning this book. If you want one good, easy to read book on type, get Ellen Lupton's "Thinking with Type." Less information, but much easier on the eyes to read, concise and clear.
