My new best friend May 30, 2011

I purchased the Thinkpad X220i after scanning the market for 11-13" laptops that would let me do all kinds of things ranging from browsing the net to doing heavy duty development via remote controlling a few servers I maintain. Without even starting it up for the first time I replaced the 320 GB drive with a 160 GB SSD drive from Intel and installed Ubuntu (kubuntu) linux. I was immediately impressed with the performance and how everything just worked, from wireless connection to sleep mode when closing the lid. Pretty much everything (I'm not missing anything) on the keyboard just works, including adjusting brightness, switching on/off the thinklight that lits up the keyboard when it's dark, multi media, etc.

I haven't timed it but I believe I get about 7h of operation, plus multiple sleep periods ranging from minutes to hours.

The keyboard has just the perfect feel, distinct and sold without any clattering or any other annoyances. I ended up swapping the Ctrl and Fn keys in the BIOS to suit my preference of having the Ctrl key all the way to the left, works flawlessly. Having used Thoshibas and Dells with a trackpoint in the past I was delighted to start using it again. The touchpad does work nicely though, with two-finger scrolling and everything.

Coming from a luggable Dell Precision M90 (a 17" beast) I find the X220i super light and very easy to fit in any of my messenger bags or backpacks. The power supply is quite small and easy to pack as well, for the rare occasions I anticipate a need for a recharge.

The speakers have a tinny character and I wouldn't recommend listening to music through them for any length of time, but this is not an issue for me as I prefer to use headphones.

Fan noise and heating is far better than my expectations. This is a quiet and cool machine.

My dog tripped over the power cord at one point, freaked out, and dashed off giving the X220i a good 3ft drop from the table. I snapped back part of the plastic around the display and now it's as good as new. Solid stuff.

Would I buy it again or recommend it to a friend? YES!

The company delivered it on time. However, the built-in camera was not working very well. I choose Lenovo because its a global brand, a Chinese brand, and I travel to China often for work--however getting them to honor their warranty in China is problematic and difficult.

Ok, but many issues!! May 22, 2011
By JJDR
Hello, I went ahead and order this laptop, which was sold thru Amazon, At first the laptop looks very nice, but after using it for 2 days I can tell you the following issues: 1. the webcam is horrible! my $200 netbook has a better camera, the prolem is the definition and color! 2. The screen is also kind of poor, somehow the colors are not very crisp nor clear, specially if you compare it next to an apple air. 3. Hard drive makes a wired noise when powering off, I can hear the drive spin down like for 3 seconds, after everything is shut down, all this in an unhealthy way. 4. The backspace key makes a crack sound, all other keys are ok. 5. the track pad is also faulty, specially the scroll function and the right click, it activates when wanting to left click.

Other than that, the laptop has a great look and feel, the size is perfect so is the performance. the battery last around 5+ hrs.

I'm still debating If I shall return it or not, the problem is that it looks very nice and is quite light, but has many quality issues! oh well, hope this helps, I might just get a dell 14R, from past experienced, Dell has better quality control ( new models )

Cheers!
