5.0 out of 5 stars VERY SURPRISED!, September 5, 2008
This review is from: NIV Thinline Bible, Renaissance Fine Leather, Ebony (Leather Bound)
I purchased this Bible for general reading. My Bible translation for more serious study and memorization is the ESV. However, I enjoy the NIV for general reading and overview.

When I first handled this Bible, I thought there was a mistake in the pricing. This is certainly a beautiful Bible to hold and behold. What they are calling Renaissance Leather is probably some type of lambskin. It has the feel of fine glove leather. It has stitching around the entire cover which only adds to its beauty.

The paper and print are far-better than I expected for a Bible of this price. Even for my 46 year old eyes, I am able to comfortably read the text. One pleasant surprise is that this is a smyth-sewn Bible! That simply means that the pages are sewn together rather than glued. This should add to the Bible's durability.

As far as I am concerned, Zondervan got this one right! If you are looking for a Bible that looks and feels like a quality Bible should, you cannot go wrong with this Bible.

I collect fine Bibles as well as study and read them! I have over 60 Leather Bibles, I have spent over $160 on a Bible in the past (it was an R.L. Allan Bible). I love a good quality Bible and these days they are hard to find. most are bonded leather with glued bindings. This Bible is one of the finest I have found for a quality Binding at an affordable price. It is not as nice as a Nelson Signature Series, nor a RL Allan but for the price you can't beat it. It has very soft Leather (Think soft goat skin driving gloves - with a flexible paper backing) It has a Smith Sewn binding, which will lasts much longer then the glued bindings. This Bible does not have center column references, but it has very readable text. I personally wish it was not a red letter Bible but it is and it is still very easy to read. If you are looking for a nice Bible for either yourself or a gift, this one will last for years. It is the finest Bible I've seen from Zondervan. I found it at a local Christian book store and paid $50 for it on the spot, then when I got home I bought a second one from amazon so I could have two for my collection... I liked it that much! P.S. After doing some research I found this is made from soft Calf skin leather although it feels like goat skin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible value for good-quality Bible, August 10, 2009

I purchased this Bible several months ago, and am very pleased with it. I love the NIV translation; I find it both accurate and clear. The price for the quality is amazing.

The binding is a soft and flexible premium leather. It resumes its original shape, without warp or damage to binding, after opening it--even when folded backwards, past flat. I believe the price reduction must be due to the fact that they could use smaller pieces of leather (the binding is stitched, in two pieces.) The spine is stamped with silver-coloured metal; the outside front has no lettering. The pages are coated in silver-coloured rather than gold-coloured metallic foil.

There are no book introductions or other commentary: the Bible consists entirely of front matter (including "Presented To" page), NIV preface, text (with footnotes), concordance, and maps. The concordance is quite extensive, covering over 100 pages; the maps are adequate for a personal Bible and cover eight pages.

Detail-oriented typographical experts: The text has no pair kerning. The few italic words are set in an oblique, rather than cursive, style. Small caps are faked. Since the type is thin and clear, it is quite easy to read. Numbers are superscript sans-serif (except for a few which are mistakenly set in the same type as the text). The section headings are in a bold oblique sans-serif. The words of Christ are in red.
