I've owned an ESV compact thinline Bible for four years. I like that though the font is small (6-point font), it's crisp and not too difficult to read. The pages have also resisted yellowing or looking nasty from oils on your skin, unlike some other Bibles I've owned. The ESV is a great translation, too--though it's not so fluid and readable as many people tout that it is. I still find some archaic or awkward phrasings which I wish the editors had reworked before publication.

My only gripe with this Bible is the durability of its cover. I have the TruTone edition pictured here, and within a few weeks the red coloring started wearing off, revealing a hideous orange-brown layer underneath. Over the next two years this eventually covered almost all the edges, corners, and any place it got scuffed in transit. Then, after that, the orange stuff started coming off in small chunks, revealing some white fibrous material underneath. On top of that, the cover (presumably from oils) turned from a bright cranberry to a darker maroon color. I bought this edition for its stunning beauty, but most of that has been lost.

No one buys a Bible this small for normal reading. You buy one like this to carry around in your bag while you travel, or to church, or other places you want a convenient size. Such a Bible gets handled and abused a lot, and I question the value of a TruTone cover which lacks the durability needed for such a use.

I love my ESV! It's really nice because it's close enough to the NIV that is typical in my church, but it's a bit more poetic, which I like. I decided to get one this summer because I worked at a Christian camp, and all the girls I worked with seemed to have a pretty little ESV. Before this I had two Bibles, neither of which really met my needs. I was kind of worried about a thinline because I had heard that the pages can be too seethrough, but that hasn't been an issue with this one. I like to read lying in bed, and this Bible is perfect for that!

Ok, I know convenience and style are not the point, but they are nice bonuses in a bible. I just lightened my load without sacrificing the Word! And it's pretty, too. I love my new bible!
