5.0 out of 5 stars Someone's gonna eat Crow...
Third Day have won many Dove Awards, both as a band and individually, and this album is where it all started. They've messed with a few different sounds over the years, from near-pop to hard rock, but this, their first release, is 100% pure southern-fried-stompin' good. Not only are they one of the best Christian bands in circulation; they're one of the best southern-rock...

Third Day have won many Dove Awards, both as a band and individually, and this album is where it all started. They've messed with a few different sounds over the years, from near-pop to hard rock, but this, their first release, is 100% pure southern-fried-stompin' good. Not only are they one of the best Christian bands in circulation; they're one of the best southern-rock bands I've ever heard. There isn't a song on this album I'd dare to skip. Not only that; as with all of their other songs, there's enlightenment and storytelling savoir-faire from start to finish. There's a lesson in each song, as Mac Powell waxes poetic about the lengths one would go to for pure love ('Just To Be with You') and the crucifixion (from one of the thieves' point of view...very stirring) ('Who Is This Man'). Third Day also takes a jab at secular music (namely, the Black Crowes) on 'Black Bird', one of my personal faves. They even take it up a notch and sprinkle the song with titles from early Black Crowes tunes. Clev-ver! The true southern-fried grit is in their straight-up praise songs; it always has been. The last track is the best example, with easy lyrics to pick up and sing along with, and it's one of the most memorable on any of their albums (mostly because of the happily jingling instruments in the background).
Third Day's self-titled debut is a feel-great mix of southern rock, campfire stories, and uplifting worship...and it only gets better from there, as you've probably no doubt heard. Don't pass this one up, and if you get the chance, definitely go see them live! They're one of the few bands who're just as good, if not better, in person. (See their "Offerings" DVD for proof on film! Not that that's a plug or anything...)

I bought this CD when it was first released, listen to it constantly, and cannot imagine ever tiring of it! This music just engulfs you with the awesomeness of Christianity. It puts perfectly into words and music everything that I have ever felt as a Christian, and reminds me constantly that I am a Christian by choice, and that is a wonderful choice to make. Many times a listen to this CD will bring to mind prayers that need to be said, and repentance that needs to be made, but it is not judgmental or condescending. Quite the contrary, it so perfectly displays God's greatness, that it makes me want to be as worthy as I in my infinite unworthiness can be. I feel refreshed with each listen. Please, buy this CD; you will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comparable to "Time", but not "Conspiracy", May 4, 2000
This review is from: Third Day (Audio CD)
If you like Third Day's third CD ("Time"), but you don't like their second ("Conspiracy"), then don't think that you'll dislike this first CD of theirs ("Third Day"). It is more like "Time".

"Nothin' At All" made it to a WOW CD, so you know it has to be popular.

"Love Song" was my personal favorite of theirs until they came out "I've Always Loved You" (on the "Time" CD).

"Thief" is about the repentant thief who died next to Jesus on the cross (whereas "Can't Take the Pain" from the "Time" CD is about Peter).

"Consuming Fire" is their hardest song and displays the strength and deepness of the lead singer's voice.

All the songs are great; and there is enough variety so that just about anyone considering it will enjoy at least some set of songs. I hope this review has been helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, January 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Third Day (Audio CD)
A friend of mine informed me of the Rapture. I was amazed. I went to church with my family but had never heard of such a thing. She also told me about the Left Behind books. She invited me then to attend a youth retreat with her one weekend. I went along. There we watched the Left Behind movie and also sang the song Consuming Fire by Third Day. I was hooked to the song and another friend of mine offered to lend me her tape. I have just today finished the first Left Behind book. While reading it I decided I needed to have Jesus in my life. I turned my Third Day CD on and prayed for an hour or so that Jesus would save my soul. I am proud to say that I am a Born Again Christian thanks to Left Behind, my two friends, and Third Day. The album is amazing and great for any Christian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian music at it's best, June 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Third Day (Audio CD)
I stumbled onto Third Day from the WOW 99 CD. Their version of Micheal W. Smith's Agnus Dei is one of my favorite songs. The singer can definitely deliver a song. I then stumbled onto them again on the 97 WOW CD, with "Nothing At All", once again I found it to be the best song on the album, or close to it. This compelled me to go out and find the Third Day albums. I wasn't disappointed at all. The fact is they can hold a candle to any of the mainstream rockers. I recommend this album for anyone who enjoys either good old fashioned rock or Grunge music. Before I found Third Day, I thought DC talk was by far the best, now I'm not so sure. BUY IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Debut, November 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Third Day (Audio CD)
Third Day may be young, but they have been around a little while. The first I heard of them was back in 1995 when "Thief" and "Did You Mean It" both got airplay in the Atlanta area. I knew they would be a hard-rock outfit after hearing those two songs, but I never would have predicted that they would grow to become such a well-known and loved group. Also, you could have never told me then how much I would grow to like their music now.

Two things impressed me about this debut CD. One, Third Day (specifically Mac Powell) wrote all their own music. Many new bands either cover other people's songs or bring in more veteran guest writers. Also, young bands often have yet to develop good song writing talents. Of course, none of these traits played into Third Day's first CD. Secondly, Rich Mullins played as a guest instrumentalist on "Praise Song." Those of you who are Rich Mullins' fans know that he was gracious, but he did not lend out his name indiscriminately. Having Rich Mullins play on this album is an endorsement indeed.

I imediately enjoyed "Nothing At All," "Did You Mean It," and "Praise Song." In fact, having "Nothing At All" start the sequencing and then finishing with "Praise Song" is a stroke of genius. As with the remaining ten songs sandwiched in between, the whole album demonstrates strong lyrics, talented musicians, and Mac Powell's signature vocals. There is a good mixture of guitar rockers ("Consuming Fire" for example), power ballads ("Thief"), and acustic gems ("Take My Life").

Although they really sound nothing like the Black Crows, their style fits right in with the newer southern rock bands that have gained popularity in the past ten years. The biggest difference is that Third Day plays music that lifts up Jesus and stirs the soul to meditate on and praise God. This is a strong debut from them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third Day: Keeping faith simple, October 13, 2000
By
Ken Mecone (Grand Island, NE) - See all my reviews

If you want straight-ahead, raw, passionate, and groovy rock and roll to play on your CD player, you can't go wrong with Third Day's first release.

"Forever" was the first cut I heard on this CD, and I was immediately blown away. A few days later, my local radio station played "Thief" and I was mesmerized by the dramatic presentation of the spiritual birth of one of the two crucified with Christ...I was in tears by the end of the song. Needless to say, I immediately went out and bought the CD and was not disappointed in a single track. The simplicity of the lyrics, combined with the raw energy that permeates each tune, makes for a powerful, life-changing musical experience. I believe this CD should be a must-listen for anyone who has recently come to faith in Jesus Christ.

I lead a worship band at church, and we performed "Thief" and "Love Song" on this past Easter Sunday, The result? There were many tissues present, dabbing at the eyes of those whose hearts were touched. Get stolen away by "Thief"...become consumed by the Spirit with "Consuming Fire"...see a glimpse of God's undying love through "Love Song"...tap into your own heart's desire for surrender to God in the lyrics of "Take From Me My Life"...You will NOT be disappointed!

Thank you Third Day for such an honest, passionate album about faith, failure, redemption, and forgiveness!

5.0 out of 5 stars great songs, awesome lyrics, great sound, July 2, 2000
This review is from: Third Day (Audio CD)
Can you say, "ROCK!" ? These songs are awesome and so is the band. Penetrating lyrics that actually mean something and a great sound to boot. You can listen to this CD front to back over and over... it's like a greatest hits CD. If you heard "I've Always Loved You" on the radio and liked the sound, get this CD, it is awesome and all of the songs are of the same caliber as those that get radio airplay. A mix of acoustic, folk and alternative rock that is just awesome. I've seen these guys in concert twice and their sound just never gets old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did I wait?, November 23, 1999
This review is from: Third Day (Audio CD)
For a long time, I put off buying this CD. I don't know why. It's an amazing CD. Excellent songwriting with excellent sound. But even better than their albums are their live shows. If you ever get a chance to hear them live, go!
