Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This remarkable book argues that the rise of materialistic, patriarchal western civilization has been accompanied by the elevation of the eye over the ear as the preferred sensory organ, with profoundly negative results for humankind. To support this thesis, the author--a theoretical physicist, jazz scholar, and world traveler--takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the realms of comparative anthropology, mythology, acoustics, biology, psychology, and dozens of related fields. Berendt draws sweeping yet believable analogies; almost every chapter contains revelations and unusual perceptions that give great pleasure. At times, however, his missionary zeal leads him to overstate a point, and much of the material is repetitive. These shortcomings can be overlooked, given the fundamental truth of the message. Extensive notes and a valuable bibliography accompany this fluent, engaging translation from the German edition published in 1985. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Broadening perceptions via consious listening., November 2, 1997

This review is from: The Third Ear: On Listening to the World (Paperback)
This is not a "How-to" book, but an incisive examination of the human aural capacity. The tenet of this work is that the human sense of hearing and thoughtful human interpretation serve to not only make sound meaningful but also an effective multi-dimensional tool of time and space. Tim Nevell has done a superb job of translation.

I read this book back in 1994 and still remember it!

This book is a stunning collection of writing - well researched, and highly thought provoking too. If you're a fan of music, or the study of sound in general - and how that relates to literally everything else in life - read this book. It's an over-abundance of knowledge.

I first read this many years ago when it first came out. I was glad to be able to find another after I gave yet another copy to a friend. This is a very intriguing book.
