3.0 out of 5 stars Not your complete 3G Wireless reference
This is a book packed with information. It may well be not the information you are looking for though.

The book addresses mainly the radio aspects of wireless communications (propagation, modulation, antennas, etc.) There is no reference to the global third generation wireless system architecture, network elements and their interaction, interworking with the PSTN, etc...

This review is from: Third Generation Mobile Telecommunication Systems: UMTS and IMT-2000 (Engineering Online Library) (Hardcover)
This is a book packed with information. It may well be not the information you are looking for though.

The book addresses mainly the radio aspects of wireless communications (propagation, modulation, antennas, etc.) There is no reference to the global third generation wireless system architecture, network elements and their interaction, interworking with the PSTN, etc. As an engineer who is looking to understand the basic call flows from the Mobile Station to Mobile Switching Center, the signaling protocols involved, user data transport, etc. I was a bit disapointed by this book.

Also, as what could be considered by some a useful feature, the books consists of totally independent chapters treating totally independent topics. The book lacks unity and for some chapters I had the impression I was reading research articles in the IEEE Magazine.

This book was not useful to me, and I returned it. However, if you are involved in the physical radio aspects of third generation networks as an engineer, professor or student, this may be an interesting book for you.

If you are looking for a book that treats all aspects of third generation wireless networks, from the physical radio aspects to network architecture, protocols and call flows, there are better books already in print (e.g. "WCDMA for UMTS" by Harri Holma and Antti Toskala), and hopefully much better books to be printed.
