As a parent to a now 2nd and 4th grader, I was amazed at how quickly the work accelerates between those two grades. In all learning modules, Grade 3 is no cake walk. Some concepts are reinforced through an expansion of previously-learned areas such as parts of speech which are now expected to be diagrammed within sentences.

The greatest leap, however, seems to be in math. The work moves from straightforward, plug-and-play digit computation to imagining numbers and forms in multiple dimensions. Nowhere is this more evident than in geometry. Based on my family's experience, if you depend on the class work to adequately prepare your young learner for these higher-level concepts, you will be putting them at a huge disadvantage.

Sylvan workbooks help ease the transition from concrete to abstract reasoning. The strength of Sylvan workbooks is reinforcement through repetition. Flips, slides and turns are presented six ways from Sunday allowing your learner to become comfortable with imaging objects in various planes and spaces. The same helpful redundancy is brought to perimeter, area, pentominoes, tangrams, and tessellations.

I found myself checking my work (I always review the sheets before I have my kids do them) with the answer key in the back of the book. Imagining objects in space is not an innate talent. For some kids, these skills need to be developed the hard way through practice, practice, practice.

This workbook makes practice perfect. Supplement this work with the hands-on manipulatives by Learning Resources Soft Foam Geometric Shapes (LER6120).

I have a real go getter who enjoys math and challenges. I home school her with mainly, Sylvan workbooks. She completed over 300 pages in the Sylvan 3rd Grade Math in four months, so I procured the Geometry Book and have slowed her down. She wants to do it all of the time and is really learning. This book is not too advanced and is a great start for an eight year old.

I bought this book as an addition to my sons math curricula. I have never been a fan of Geometry. We haven't started using this book yet, but after reviewing it, I feel that it is very thorough and a good purchase.

I think this would work better at home for parents. Not as a supplemental resource for teachers. I will more than likely toss this to the side.
